Sunday, January 30, 2011 1:00 PM

On January 23, 2011, our family lost the oldest son and our big brother, John Repass. After a valiant four year battle with cancer, the good Lord decided he had suffered enough and took him home. Our loss leaves a void in our family that cannot be filled. We take solace in knowing that he was surrounded by family when he left on his next journey.

Joseph McDonnal

Joseph Edward McDONNAL Joe McDonnal was born in Pueblo, Colorado, to Flora and William McDonnal on July 10, 1931. The family moved to Pendleton, Oregon, in Joe's childhood, and then settled permanently in Corvallis, Oregon. After high school, Joe attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, then joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War. Joe finished his studies at the University of Washington, where he received a Bachelors of Arts in General Sciences. Joe worked with Jim Crissey of Crissey Flowers during that time and pursued his decorating talents at the hand of a master. When Joe graduated university in 1958, he departed for New York, where he continued to work in the floral decorating business under the prominent house of Judith Garden. Joe then opened his own flower shop in Manhattan called The Gazebo, which was well received and a spiritual success. When his day's decorating work was finished, Joe found his way into the catering kitchen of the Plaza Hotel, and began his professional career as a cook, chef and caterer. After nine years in New York, Joe took a vacation to Spain intended for six weeks, and stayed for nine years. Joe settled in Marbella on the Costa del Sol, and opened a restaurant called El Oasis, followed by another called El Platanal. After nine years, the drought in Spain got him down, and he longed for a good old Northwest rainstorm. Joe returned to Seattle, and was attracted to the Pike Place Market, which was under renovation at that time. He leased a space in the Corner Market Building, designed it exquisitely, and opened Market Place Caterers in 1976, a restaurant, private dining room and catering business. Joe's reputation grew quickly, with word of mouth always being his best advertising. In 1989 Joe began pursuing his final dream of establishing a private dining club with catering facilities, which he accomplished in The Ruins with its opening in 1993. After founding this sizable venture Joe continued to work tirelessly in the business, designing and executing his catering work until his health demanded his departure from the stove in August, 1998. Joe continued to work in an administrative capacity until his full retirement a few years ago as his health declined further. Joe succumbed to pneumonia on January 31 in Palm Springs, California. Joe is survived by a large and loving family: Virginia Wyman, his spouse of 32 years; sister Maribel Cadmus of Salem, Oregon; brother Bill McDonnal and his wife Marianne of Los Altos, California; brother Fred McDonnal and his wife Marie of McMinnville, Oregon; ten nieces and nephews, one deceased; twenty-one great-nieces and nephews; four great-great- nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins. Funeral Mass for Joe will be held at St. James Cathedral on Thursday, February 10, at 2:30 p.m., with a reception following at The Ruins. Cremation and burial at Calvary Cemetery in the week following. Remembrances may be made in Joe's memory to Seattle Opera, PO Box 9248, Seattle 98109; or Pacific Northwest Ballet, 301 Mercer St, Seattle 98109. She was later married to Robert Norris of Ames, Iowa in 1955, She was a lifelong avid sports fan and loved, but was frequently disappointed by her favorite Chicago Cubs. Her love of sports started when her father began taking her to Notre Dame football games. Her favorite team was the Cyclones of Iowa State University located in Ames, Iowa where she lived from 1941 until 1962. She always spoke highly of the University and immensely enjoyed her time while working Iowa State's Home Economics Department as assistant to the Dean. She was a voracious reader, particularly liking biographies and history. She was a superb bridge player and played until the age of 92 and was always selected as a favorite partner by her friends and bridge club members. She was a lifelong member of P.E.O where she made many friends as she and her husband Robert moved from Ames to Denver to Pasadena California and finally to Seattle because of Robert's work as a senior executive for the Coca Cola Company. She and her older sister Dorothy Challman of Mount Vernon, Indiana exchanged letters almost weekly for 80 years until Dorothy passed away early in 2006. They were truly the closest of sisters. Margaret loved to travel and made several voyages of freighters that carried small groups of adventurous travelers. She made several trips to Europe including one with her grandson Michael that they both enjoyed tremendously. Her most exciting trip was a safari to Africa with her sister, her niece Katzie and her nephew Steve. She particularly enjoyed her China expedition, one of her last trips, which she made in her 80's. Margaret and her family are grateful for the professional and personal care she received from the staff of Richmond Beach Rehabilitation during her last years.

Shirley Mae Clippinger

Shirley Mae Clippinger of Gold Bar, WA, cast off her earthly body on January 29, 2011 at the age of 86. She died from a massive stroke. Her family and friends are happy that she will be without pain and the physical limitations of a body that had failed to keep up with her spirit., Shirley has shown her family the meaning of strength and hope. She maintained a strong will and determination to control her own health and life. Our diminutive mother, all 4'6" of her, has always been a force to contend with especially when we bumped up against her will. When things became overwhelming for her, she finally agreed to move into an Adult Family Home., Mom loved the Gold Bar area and in her younger years, you may have passed her walking on a back trail hunting for mushrooms that she would make a neighbor eat first. Or you may have seen her sitting on a riverbank with her fishing pole in hand. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and gardening. You may have been sitting at the craft table doing ceramics with her. Or you may have played Bunco once a month with her. You may have sat with her at the Gold Bar, hall. Words to describe our mom. A worrier. Impatient. Scrappy. Very emotional. A perfectionist., Preceded in death by husband of 63 years, Elbert (Bud) Clippinger; parents, Price and Dorothy Ballard; brothers, George and Jerry Ballard., Survived by her sister, Carolyn Bergeron. Surviving daughters, Judy (Richard) Boyd of Marysville, WA and Diane Carrillo of Arlington, WA.
