A. Rudolph HILL A. Rudolph Hill, born March 24, 1926, went home May 30, 2011 in Seattle, WA. Rudy was born in Brooklyn, New York. He made his way to Seattle and married Eleanor Lewis in 1948. He is survived by his sons Martin (Silvia), Reginald (Tanya), Victor (Wanda) and Benjamin; 6 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife Eleanor. Arlene LaBelle Anderson

Arlene LaBelle Anderson was born and raised on a farm in Brinsmade, ND. She was the oldest of three daughters born to Chester and Naomi White., Arlene passed away on Friday, June 3, 2011 from complications occurring after heart bypass surgery., Arlene attended school in Brinsmade and graduated from Minnewaukan High School in ND, after which time she worked for the office of the State's Attorney in the city of Minnewaukan. She eventually married her high school sweetheart, U.S. Army Sergeant Allan O. Anderson ("Andy") in 1950 in Fort Dix, NJ. They spent one week in New York City as a honeymoon after which time Andy returned to Europe for a year and Arlene to North Dakota., Andy's Army career spanned 20 years, as they served in Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Japan, Germany, Korea and Viet Nam. They eventually retired to Washington State, living in the city of Marysville. Arlene worked at the Bank of Everett for ten years and later, at Word Of Life Lutheran Brethren Church, as a member and church secretary for approximately 20 years. The love of her life, Andy, passed on in 1984, leaving a multitude of wonderful memories Arlene was eager to remember and recount., "Mom", as she was affectionately called by her children, loved God with fervor, loved her family with a true mother's countenance, and enjoyed people immensely, never meeting a stranger, and forever cultivating long and rich relationships. She enjoyed doing and helping. Even her time in her hospital bed in the last days became a witness to all of her enduring love of God, family, people and service., She is now resting and rejoicing in Heaven; a place she has prepared herself for all her life. She is loved and will be missed., Arlene is survived by her children in order of birth, Linda, Douglas and Sonja, Linda and Bernie Travers, Doug and JoD Anderson, and Sonja and Larry Butler; Arlene's granddaughter, Jenae and her husband Jon Hart gave Arlene three great-grandchildren, Kadimay, Audrey and Hunter Hart. Arlene also had numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends. BERNITA RICKERT EHRENBERG 12/22/1915 - 6/4/2011 Born December 22, 1915 in Virigina, Illinois. Died June 4, 2011 in Tacoma, Wa. Left to mourn are sons, Mark and Barry (Mary) Rickert of Tacoma. Grandson Bryan (Laura) Bernhagen of Seattle, Granddaughter Lisa (Paul Marston) Bernhagen of West Seattle and Greatgrandson Benjamin Marston. Preceded in death by her parents James and Linnie Jones, daughter Sherry Bernhagen, brothers Earl, Everett, Edward and Carl. Sisters Helena, Gladys and Marguerite. Bernita was raised in the Tri-Cities and came to Tacoma in 1937 where she lived for the rest of her life. Bernita was an avid gardener. She loved family camping trips and being with family. We would like to thank the Peoples Retirement Center for the loving care she received while there. At Bernita's request there will be no funeral services. BETH ANN (WIDHOLM) CAMPBELL

On Monday, June 6, 2011, Beth Ann Widholm Campbell passed from this life in her home in Ashkum, IL., She was born September 20, 1950 in Watseka, IL to Milton and Marion Widholm of Ashkum, IL., Beth leaves behind her husband of 39 years, Con Campbell and their twin daughters, Kelly (Denver, CO) and Katie (Xenia, OH). She also leaves her sister, Janet and Paul Repetto (Boulder, CO); her brother, Jack and Sally Widholm (Champaign, IL); her brother, Eric Widholm (Boynton Beach, FL); her brother-in-law, Rand and Glenda Campbell (Danville, IL); and many nieces and nephews., Beth lived her life like she fought her cancer - gracefully, with faith, humor, and with her love of Jesus., She graduated from the, with a degree in Retail Marketing and soon after, married Con on August 26, 1972. Beth shared her husband's love of flying and had her own commercial pilot license with an instrument rating. Con's career took them to Dana Point, CA, Anchorage, AK, and Anacortes, WA before returning to her hometown, Ashkum, IL., Her zest for life was evident in every aspect of her life, but most notably in her devotion to her family and friends. She loved cheering for Katie and Kelly's University of Kansas softball team and traveling with family and friends., Beth was a woman of many interests and talents. She was devoted to gardening, music, flying, welding, fishing, and canning. Beth's lifelong commitment to the environment and to the land she and Con farmed as a young married couple, as well as a lifetime of community service inspires everyone whose life she touched. Her legacy runs wide and deep., Beth was a Master Gardener, which eventually led to a business venture called, The Arrangement., Beth was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Danforth, played piano and sang in the church choir. Her commitment to her community began early in her life as a member of 4-H. She was actively involved in 4-H with her daughters and beyond, as a Youth Leader and Advisor. For 32 years, Beth was a member of Kankakee Kultivators and served many terms as president. She was an Iroquois County Fair Flower and Vegetable Superintendant; and a National Flower Show Judge. Beth was named The Junior League of Kankakee's Volunteer of the Year. Two years ago, Beth and her business partner, Paula Warmbir, opened the contemporary home and décor shop, Inside Out in Gilman., Arrangements are being handled by Knapp Funeral Home in Clifton., A visitation is scheduled for Sunday, June 12 from 2:00 to 8:00Pm. Barbara Renee Stettler

Passed away at her home in Cheney, WA from complications of lung cancer on June 1, 2011. Born December 29, 1940 in Ogden, Utah where she lived until she was 34-years-old. Barbara was one of the first women to graduate with a BS in Physics from Weber State College in 1974. The family moved to Prosser, WA in 1974 where she worked as a Physicist at Westinghouse Hanford for five years. In 1981, the family moved to Cheney, WA where Barbara worked at Eastern Washington University as an Instructional Tech in the Physics Dept. until she retired in 1998. The years spent at EWU were some of her happiest. Barbara enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, crochet, drawing, and pottery. She was an avid reader and enjoyed long discussions with family and friends at the kitchen table. She spent the past 10 years researching family genealogy and has documented her ancestry. Her interest in genealogy stemmed from her love of her grandparents, Agnes Dollar (Morrow) Johnston and David S. Johnston. Doing internet research she discovered family members in Scotland and shared email with many friends who provided her much joy over the years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmett Lorenzo Barton and Barbara Irene (Johnston) Barton, her brother Larry David Barton, and her great-granddaughter Taylor Ashlyn Peterson. Barbara is survived by her husband, Dale John Stettler. They married on March 15, 1957. Together they had four children: Dale Dean (Peggy L.) Stettler, Timothy Todd Stettler, Bambie Lynn Stettler and Jennifer Jill Stettler. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Brandy Brook (Gavin Craig) Peterson, Ashley Anné Stettler; her great-grandson, Tanner Craig Peterson; her brother, Robert Emmett (Elaine) Barton; and her sister-in-law, Carol C. Clouie Lee Greenway, 60, born March 5, 1951, went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 21, 2011. She was a resident of Highline Care Center in East Wenatchee, but she made her home in the Chelan Valley before she was stricken with many health issues. 


 


 

Cora Pauline Bennigson

Pauline was born in Warner, Alberta. She graduated from Sacred Heart School of Nursing 1948, married Thomas Kauffman and had two children, son Thomas (Debra) and daughter Cynthia. She married Myron (Mike) Bennigson in 1960. Polly and Mike spent many enjoyable years at their summer home on Lake Coeur d'Alene while operating McMillans shoe store in downtown Spokane. She continued her career in retail at the Bon Marche and retired from Dodson's Jewelers. Polly is survived by her children and grandchildren, Kelly and Mark (Holly) Kauffman. Passed away on June 2, 2011 in Spokane, WA. Daniel was a long time resident of the Tum Tum area where he farmed and did contracting work until a stroke in 2007. Daniel is survived by his wife of 69 years, Ruth J. Riehle; four children, Joanne Dickison (Deer Park), Joyce Koch (Niagara Falls, NY), Kathleen Laurie (Tacoma), and Daniel C. Riehle (Deer Park); nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Preceded in death by five brothers; one sister and one grandson. Daniel Lee Williams of Snohomish, WA, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2011., He leaves behind his wife, Juanita; his children, Dannita Williams Schacht, Scott Williams, Kevyn Williams and Melana Williams Salsbury; along with four grandchildren; brothers, Steve and Mark Williams of Snohomish; and Wendy Criscuolo., Dan was born in 1942 and lived his life in Snohomish with his family in Machias. He graduated from Snohomish High School, attended UW and Cal State where he met Juanita and married in 1965, and returned to Washington to raise their four children., Dan started in real estate in 1971 with D.A. Duryee and in 1990, started his own brokerage as ERA Dan Williams Realty which his wife, Juanita and son, Kevyn are now running., He enjoyed his time with his family, the Mariners, his trips to Hawaii in July, the Wednesday night bowling league, and hunting with his friends., The family is planning an open house to celebrate his life at the family home on Sunday, June 12, 2011 between 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. (during the Mariner game, of course)., Donations in Dan's memory may be made to

Dean Elwin Larsen

Dean E. Larsen went home to be with God on June 2, 2011 in Snohomish, WA. He was born in Rice Lake, Wisconsin on October 19, 1946 to Sanford and Ella (Karlgaard) Larsen., He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Edith; sons, Jim, Jason and Jeremy; and the light of his life, his grandson, Tristin Larsen. He also leaves his sister, Shirley Johnson; brother, Terry (Pat) Larsen; beloved sister-in-law, Shirley Larsen; and numerous nieces and nephews., He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Elizabeth; his parents, Sanford and Ella; and his brothers, Harley Donald and Dale Sanford Larsen., Dean graduated from Cascade High School in 1965 and attended Bible College. He attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints - Machias Ward and was blessed with a wonderfully supportive church family., Dean proudly spent his career at The Everett Herald (and Western Sun) starting in the mailroom in August of 1965. He held a number of positions in the circulation department at the newspaper including night clerk, district manager, zone manager, assistant circulation manager and home delivery manager before retiring in February, 1992. He considered his co-workers his second family and appreciated their love and support over the years., Beyond his deep love of family, Dean also loved Harley Davidson motorcycles and spending time in his yard in rural Snohomish. He collected single-action Colt pistols and Case knives., Graveside services will be held on June 13 at 2 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery, 4504 Broadway in Everett. Instead of flowers, the family is hoping that people will bring red and gold balloons to release at the conclusion of the service.


 


 

Delbert G. Fischer

Delbert G. Fischer, was born May 1, 1936 to Gottlieb and Mathilda Fischer in Mercer, ND. He passed from this life on May 30, 2011 at Providence Medical Center in Everett with his wife by his side. He graduated from Bismarck High School and served in the US Army during the, . He attended NDSU., Del leaves behind his wife of 36 years, Nancy; sons, Stuart (Annie), Joey (Rosa) and Austin (Kari); granddaughter, Angela (Jason); and great-grandsons, Layten and Brayden; sister, Norma (Gary) and brother-in-law Anton; and many close friends and extended family., Del was continuously employed from the time he was six years old when he worked for his father at the family grocery store opening boxes for 25 cents an hour. At age 14, he built a cabin on Apple Creek outside Bismarck that was still being lived in 25 years later. He worked for 33 years for The Boeing Company. After retirement, he and Nancy traveled the United States, Canada and Mexico in their RV. He was an active member of the Everett Senior Center for the last 9 years of his life., A special thanks to Dr. Todd Gunderson of the Everett Clinic and Dr. Ali Samii of the UW Medical Center and the VA Puget Sound Medical Center who took such excellent care of our husband, father, grandparent and friend. Donald Ralph Silver

Born February 1, 1939; went home to be with his Lord and Savior on June 4, 2011. He was born in La Grande, OR., Pastor Don served his Lord faithfully for many years with Pastor Bob Smith at Community Bible Chapel. He became a "Fishers of men" and many came to know the Lord through his service to the Lord. He was instrumental in helping those struggling with addictions and loved his ministry. He was preceded in death by his parents. Don leaves behind his beloved wife Amy and his four children Matthew (Theresa), Mead, WA. Nathan and John Silver and Heather Parker (Dave) from Marysville, WA. Stepdaughter Vicky Swanbeck, Seattle, WA and stepson Scott Swanbeck (Lauri) from Nampa, ID. Dorothy Mary Schaefer

SCHAEFER, Dorothy Mary, Dorothy was born Decem-ber 28, 1914 in Victoria, British Columbia to Elizabeth Loretta (née Donnelly) and Joseph James Vincent Black. In 1919 the family relocated to Saskatchewan when her father's employer transferred him there. A few years later they went to Ontario, Canada for a short period and then moved permanently to Southern California. Dorothy attended St. Mary's Academy in Inglewood, CA where she was the youngest student in the class of 1930, graduating when she was only 15. After attending Los Angeles City College for two years, she enrolled in Queen of Angels School of Nursing from which she received her RN in 1935. She worked as a nurse in Los Angeles hospitals until 1941 when she married William Franklin Grimes with whom she raised eight children. In 1964 Dorothy went back to work as a nurse and she continued to work part time until the age of 73. Bill died in 1980 and two years later Dorothy married Raymond Schaefer, a widower fifteen years her senior. They traveled the globe taking 20 trips in the seven years they had together before Ray died in 1989. Shortly after that Dorothy moved to a condo in Spokane, WA to be nearer to her three youngest daughters and their families. She spent her retirement doing volunteer work and helping to care for her growing brood of grandchildren. In 2002 she moved to a "granny flat" attached to her daughter's home. She remained quite active into her 90s until last year when failing health necessitated her to move to North Central Care Center., She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Elizabeth Loretta Black, her first husband, William F. Grimes, her second husband Raymond P. Schaefer, her eldest daughter Mara Jo (formerly Patricia Mary) Grimes, and her great-granddaughter Rachel Marie Grimes. She is survived by seven children: William (Judith) Grimes of Sunland, CA, David (Diane) Grimes of Somis, CA, Kathleen (Kent) Freiburghouse of Redondo Beach, CA, Raymond (Deborah) Grimes of Bremerton, WA, Cecilia (Stephen) Elias of Spokane, WA, Mary Ann (Michael) Carey of Spokane, WA, and Barbara (John) Gale of Nine Mile Falls, WA. She is also survived by Shari (David) Stockwell of Martinez, CA, adoptive parents of her daughter Mara's children. Her descendants number twenty grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren (including two who are expected in the next few months)., Dorothy loved working as a nurse, going to Mass (several times a week if she could manage it), singing (to herself and others), cooking (especially for a big crowd), reading murder mysteries, doing crossword puzzles, playing card games with her grandchildren (for money), and getting her hair done. Most of all she loved watching over her family who will remember her as a generous and caring mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt., Her family is extremely grateful to Dorothy's physician of 15 years, Dr. Michael Parisot, to her in-home caregivers, especially Alice and Julie, who enabled her to remain at home as long as possible, and to the staff of North Central Care Center who took such loving care of her in the last year. Inurnment will be at Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hospice of Spokane.


 


 

Douglas Franklin Brown

Douglas Franklin BROWN Doug was born August 15, 1951. He was one of five children, all of whom counted on him for his leadership and guidance after his father died in 1969. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle in 1970 and married his high-school sweetheart Nancy Ann Reynolds in 1971. He served in the Army for three years. He graduated from the University of Washington School of Civil Engineering in 1982. In 1991 he and Nancy and their children Kimberly and Jason moved to Vashon Island. He worked for King County since 1986 as a building inspector and then as as an engineer in Water and Land Resources where he worked on flood control and salmon restoration. He served as president of IFPTE Local 17 for three years. He built two homes for his family and helped two siblings with their homes. In 2010 he developed leukemia and had a bone marrow transplant in September. He struggled with the side effects of immune suppression and developed pneumonia; he died peacefully on May 31, 2011 surrounded by family and friends. He is survived by his wife Nancy, son Jason (Angie) Brown, daughter Kimberly (Rico) Gallo, precious granddaughter Fiona Sophia Gallo, his mother Viola Brown McCartney, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins. His grandson Jackson Douglas Brown is due any day. He loved to fish, boat, dig clams, work on his house, and spend time with family and friends. Doug was our rock and anchor and though he will be sorely missed, we will determinedly enjoy life and love each other deeply as we know he would have it no other way. A celebration of his life will be held June 11 at 2:00 p.m. at the Vashon Sportsman's Club. Memorials to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Eugene Norman Loe

Gene passed away June 4, 2011, of natural causes at Sacred Heart hospital in Spokane, WA. He was born September 4, 1924 in Plummer, ID, where he lived all of his life until assisted living was required. He was the son of George Samuel Loe and Iva Gennet (Beaudreau) Loe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet, and daughter, Carol Jean Houser. He is survived by his sons Ronald Loe of Spokane, WA, Kenneth Loe of Lapwai, ID; daughter Connie Pentland of Kuna, ID; stepsons Bill Braid of Spokane, WA, Terry Braid of Rathdrum, ID, Jim Braid of Medical Lake, WA; and stepdaughter Dia Tucker of Seattle, WA; also 15 grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Brothers and sisters preceding him in death were Lila Richel, Ralph Loe, Mildred Loe, Albert Loe and Georgia Shattuck. Brothers and sisters surviving him are Marybelle Grey, Jim Loe, Nadine Bruce, Minnie Quinn, Eldon Loe, LaVonne Buster and Lucille Jones. Gene graduated from Plummer High School in 1942. He joined the, and fought in Germany in World War II, was wounded in action and awarded a, . He was hospitalized in Paris, so he always said he had been to Paris and didn't like it that much. He farmed for Elmer Whitman for awhile, and then went to work at the Plummer pole yard where he worked for 19 years. In December 1964 he went to work for the highway department where he worked for the next 19 years, retiring November 30, 1984. He married Mary Sifford on July 14, 1947 and they were divorced in 1966. He was also married for a time to Floraine Bedwell, divorcing in 1974. He met Harriet Petty and discovered a mutual love of dancing, life and each other. They married on January 29, 1977. He was an avid hunter, loved to dance and also played on various teams through the years for pool, darts and bowling. He was a hard worker and although he did not have a wood burning stove himself, spent a lot of time cutting firewood for others, which he continued to do until he was 80 years old. He also loved farming and often worked in his spare time helping Tom Freeberg on his farm. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. He was known and loved by many and will be missed by all. Evelyn Marie NAVIN 1/21/1925 ~ 5/31/2011 Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, John Navin. She is survived by her son, John Navin, of Renton. Evelyn possessed a giving heart who enjoyed helping others. She was a great friend and mother until Alzheimer's Disease stole her personality and spirit. Thank-you to the Highland's Home for making her past 4.5 years more comfortable for her and her son, John. Journeyed to heaven on May 30th, 2011. Ms. Arle is survived by her niece, Susanne Canwell of Spokane, nephew, James H. Canwell of Spokane, daughter, Patrica Olson of Palm Springs CA., son-in-law, Charlie Olson of Palm Springs CA., and grandson, Jesse Olson of Palm Springs, CA. Ms. Arle was born in Oregon City, Oregon on June 29th, 1929 and lived in Springfield, OR., while growing up. She later moved to Portland and then on to Spokane, where she spent most of her life. Family was very important to Ms. Arle, as, she was very involved with her niece and nephew in everything they did. She was always there to give support and wise words. She will be missed greatly. Ms. Arle was preceded in death by her mother, Rosalie Marie Henry of Spokane, father, Vern G. Henry of Spokane, and sister/best friend, Shirley A. Canwell of Spokane. --Frederick G. Plumb passed away in his home on June 2nd, 2011. Gary L. Davis

Gary L. Davis, 73, of Everett and Lake Stevens passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2011 with his wife Kathy and family by his side. He was born in Wabeno-Soperton, WI on February 19, 1938 to Clyde and Bernice Davis., He led a remarkable and full life, inspiring countless friends and family. He graduated from Everett High School in 1956 and went on to join SM Local 66 to become a Sheet Metal Worker. From this he established and built Evergreen State Sheet Metal, or Evergreen State Heat & AC. Gary also served in the, National Guard, holding the rank of Warrant Officer. He was a talented musician working evenings throughout Snohomish County as a singer and guitarist in his country western band. He was a member of Everett Golf & CC, the Everett Elks, holding position of Chairman of the Board for 20 years, and a nationally awarded member of SMACNA Sheet Metal Association., Gary and wife Kathy were able to retire at a young age and enjoy their passion for life. They built their vacation home on Lake Chelan where they spent countless summers with their family and Chelan friends, boating and snowmobiling. Fall was his traditional hunting expedition with his son and brothers while winters he and wife Kathy spent travelling in their motorhome. Most recently Gary's spare time was spent tinkering on his prized Antique Car Collection, coffee with his morning social group, and volunteering at the Everett Elks, where he managed the construction of their new facility., Gary is survived by his children, Dale Davis (Evelyn), Darlene Salo (Ken), Sandy Clark (Tom), Shelly Thomas (Tim), Jeanne Davis and step-son, Justin Bashour (Deanna); brothers, Jim Davis (Joanne) and Mike Davis (Renee); 13 grandchildren; two great- grandchildren; and his wife and best friend, Kathy., Preceding him in death are his mother and father, Clyde and Bernice Davis; favorite uncle Melvin and aunt Kathryn McEwen; and former wives, Eileen Hoggarth and Judy Livers., Gary will be deeply missed and remembered as a driven business man, involved father, community leader, loving husband and charismatic person. George L. Petoff Sr.

George L. PETOFF, Sr. A Seattle resident since 1963, George was born April 2,1924 in Newcomb, NY and died June, 4, 2011 in Seattle, He was preceded in death by his parents Pena and Charles Petoff, brother Roger Petoff, and daughter Carol Jane Petoff. He is survived by his sister Marina Smith of Gloversville, NY, his wife of 58 years, Marjorie Anne Petoff; daughter Diana Turner (Michael), son George (Christine), and daughter Mary Anne Atzbach (Jay), six grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. George was one of only three children (all siblings) born on the Robert Pruyn Great Adirondack Camp (now known as the Santanoni Preserve). In 1935 the family moved to a farm near Gloversville,NY. There George helped with tilling the 26 acre farm, planting the seeds, tending the vegetable crops, harvesting and marketing the crops, a successful and profitable operation even during the great depression of the time. The farm legacy lives on in the form of the Petoff Garden apartments built on land donated by the family. He graduated from Broadalbin, NY High School in 1942, then enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WW II and was called to active duty in January 1943. After attending a number of training courses leading to graduation from Bombardier school, George was assigned to a B-29 crew of the 73rd Bomb Wing 497 BG and was sent to Saipan in the Marianas Islands for combat duty. He flew 35 combat missions over mainland Japan, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with 6 oak leaf clusters. George graduated with honors from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1951 earning a Mechanical Engineering degree. He worked for Chance Vought Air Craft and the University of Wichita Industrial Research Foundation before joining the Boeing Company for a 32 year career including engineering assignments in wind tunnel model design and computer aided design, last plane worked on was the B-2 Bomber. After retirement in 1987 he and Marjorie travelled throughout the United States, spending time in all 50 states, many Canadian provinces, and his parents homeland Bulgaria. George was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church since 1964 and a proud 18 year member of Alcoholics Anonymous. Gertrude C. Lavin

LAVIN, Gertrude C., Born September 19, 1923 to John T. and Elizabeth McDonald Costello in Sprague, WA, the youngest of eight children. She passed away June 4, 2011 in Spokane. She attended St. Aloysius Elementary School, Holy Names Academy and Holy Names College. Gertrude was a woman of deep faith. The focus of her life was her family, immediate and extended. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed traveling, reading, gardening, knitting and entertaining. She was a volunteer tutor at Barton School for many years. She was a member of St. Augustine's Parish for 57 years and the Manito Country Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas E. Lavin; her parents. She is survived by her sons: Patrick J. Lavin of Belmont, CA, Daniel P. Lavin of Seattle, Ted M. (Barb) Lavin of San Diego, CA; daughters: Elizabeth Lavin, Bridgid (Don) Kardong, and Sally Lavin all of Spokane; grandchildren: Kaitlin and Catherine Kardong, Nicholas, McKenna and Garrett Lavin; and a brother, John A. Gladys Teresa SMITH Gladys Teresa Smith passed away peacefully on May 30th 2011 at the age of 92 in her home in Kirkland. She was born in Perth Australia May 15th, 1919. In 1943, she met and married Francis H. Smith while he was stationed in Perth with the U.S. Navy during WWII. Shortly after their marriage, they relocated to Brisbane, Australia and as the War came to an end, stateside to Florida. Together they spent the next 20 years living through out the U.S until Francis retired from the Navy in San Diego in 1962. They moved to the Northwest in 1963 and enjoyed over 47 years of marriage until his passing in 1991. She was a member of St Louise Parish for over 40 years. Gladys was a housewife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved children, gardening, and family celebrations and was friendly and outgoing to everyone she met. We will miss her sharp wit and sense of humor. Gladys is survived by her 4 children: Robert (Jennifer) of Mukilteo, John (Kathryn) of Newcastle, David (Pam) of Kenmore and Jo Ann (Michael) of Redmond along with 6 grandchildren: Jeffrey, Karrie, Ashley, Brian, Katie, Nick and 2 great grandchildren, Meghan and McKenzie. Harold W. BILLER Harold Biller passed away May 31, 2011, in Randle, WA. He was born September 13, 1929, to Timothy Walter and Alice (McGillivary) Biller in Black Diamond, Alberta, Canada. He served in the U.S. Navy from May 5, 1947 to September 13, 1951, and received several medals, including the Korean, Navy Occupation, China Service, and Good Conduct. He was married to Mary Louise Goman, who died in 1989.A retired plumber at Boeing, he loved horses, backcountry packing, archery, hunting and fishing;he was a member of Backcountry Horsemen. Harold is survived by his sons, Tim, Joe, Al and Don; sisters, Dorothy, Beth, Joan and Nina; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; wife; daughter, Ann Marie; brothers, Robert, Dean, Calvin and Dale; and sister, Gloria. Services are private. Helen Ida (Marks) Dawes

Helen Dawes died on June 2, 2011, at home surrounded by family. She was born on the family farm in Cando, North Dakota, on August 13, 1934, and the family moved to Alderwood Manor when she was five years old. Her parents, Leslie Marks and Helen (Botz) Marks, eventually settled in Edmonds, WA and raised Helen and her four sisters, Mary Alice, Linnie, Patricia, Leslie and brother, Mike., Helen married Bruce Dawes on January 1, 1954, and together they raised five children. Helen worked as a waitress and then in the Fred Meyer service center until her retirement. Bruce died on January 30, 1999., Helen is survived by her siblings; her five children, Mary, Jerry (Lilly), Ralph (Cheryl), Juli (Glenn), and David (Dana); and her ten grandchildren, Danny (Dalise), Analisa, Whitney, Iris, Hannah, Heather (Benito), Carina, Ben, Jessica (Tor) and Jenny (Karl); and three great grandchildren, Dune, Lars and Odin., She was independent and practical, loved to read, was curious about life, questioned authority, and was a loving mother and grandmother. Her favorites were cooking for family and friends, and playing bridge., Memorial and Reception, 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, at St. Thomas More Church, 6511 176th St. S.W., Lynnwood WA. Helen Virginia Mills

Long time St. John resident, passed away Tuesday, June 07, 2011. Funeral Services will be Monday, June 13th, at 11:00 am at the St. John United Methodist Church. The graveside service will take place earlier at 10:00 am at the St. John Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday from 9 to 4 at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax. Helen was born November 4, 1915 in Portland, Oregon to Harold and Grace (Wilhelmi) Davies. She lived on a houseboat in the Willamette River until she was two years old and the family moved to Tacoma, WA. She graduated from Lincoln High School there and then went on to the College of Puget Sound and later Central Washington University where she pursued a degree in teaching. Her plans changed after meeting one of CWU's basketball players from St. John. She married Charles Woodrow "Woody" Mills at the home of her parents in Tacoma November 27, 1937. They moved to his family's farm near St. John where they lived and farmed their entire lives. She kept busy as a homemaker and mother and helped with many of the farming chores. She was affectionately known as the "egg lady" and had a regular Saturday route she would follow. Helen was a member of the St. John United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, the Wheatland Grange, the Wednesday Club and a founding member of the St. John Saddle Club. She enjoyed sewing and quilting and she also liked to travel. Helen made scrapbooks for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren that have become treasured keepsakes through the years. She loved spending time with her family and especially following her grandchildren in all their activities. She is survived by her children Janna Nelsen and Mac and his wife Karen Mills all of St. John; seven grandchildren, Mike Nelsen, Daryn Nelsen, Tom Nelsen, Joni Marsh, Holli Bafus, Rod Mills and Shani Hergert; nine great-grandchildren, Cassie Keys, Randi Nelsen, Devan Bafus, Marshall Bafus, Cooper Mills, Lance Mills, Riley Lamb, Ryan Mills, and Danny Weber. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1992, a daughter, Diana Lu Mills in 1970, her sister Gretchen Maddox, a son-in-law, Darrell Nelsen and a granddaughter-in-law, Sally Mills. Irene Varney Moran, 87, was called to be with our Lord and Savior on June 5, 2011 and is now in Paradise with Jesus., Irene was born April 10, 1924 in Gloucester, MA to parents, Manuel and Irene (Fraga) Santos., She attained her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire 1945., Irene was City Clerk for the City of Edmonds 1957-1984 and was appointed to the International Institute of Municipal Clerks in 1977., She was a long standing member of The Edmonds Floretum Garden Club and a lifetime member of Soroptimist International. She is also listed in Who's Who of American Women., Irene had many stories and was working on her memoirs. She was meticulous at keeping track of events and traditions and would never miss an opportunity to share a memory with you from her truly wonderful life. Along with all her accomplishments and awards, she was the most caring, wonderful and charitable person you could imagine, and the best mother anyone could ever have hoped to have. Jack Oliver NELSEN Jack died May 15th, 2011 at home in West Seattle at the age of 85. Beloved husband for 51 years of Fredricka A. Nelsen, who preceded him in death in 1995. Devoted father to Sue, Paula, and Philip Nelsen, and Jan Nelsen Arana (Jaime). Loving 'grandpa'to Olivia Mullen (Daniel), Rita Chavez (Francisco), Tomas and Mateo Arana. Great-grandfather to Fiona and Nora Mullen, EvaMaria and Lucia Chavez. Jack was born November 3, 1925 to June and Evan Nelsen and was a proud descendant of the Danish farming family headed by Doraand Fred Nelsen. Jack enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1934 and graduated from University of Washington after serving his country. After a distinguished 42 year career with the Boeing Company, Jack retired in 1990 to spend time with his family and pay frequent visits to Guemes Island. The family held a graveside service on May 27 at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Renton. James Louis "Jim" Schiefelbein

James Louis Schiefelbein was born to the proud parents Jack and Prudence Schiefelbein at St. Vincent's hospital August 11, 1974. A man who was larger than life and who had an even bigger heart was called home to our heavenly Father on June 5, 2011 during a tragic accident near Swift Reservoir in Skamania County. James or "Jim" grew up in Vancouver, WA but was born in Oregon and considered that his true home., Graduating class of 1993 from Columbia River High School, James attended Clark College and went to the University of Montana, graduating with a degree in Business., He returned to Vancouver and went to work for his father at Electro Inc., starting in sales, working his way up to vice president. A family run business, his sister Stephanie also worked there as the secretary, while attending school., James met his wife, Amber (Dickinson) in 2002. They began dating Feb. 14, 2003, later became engaged on Thanksgiving 2007 and eloped in South Lake Tahoe, CA, July 29, 2008, along with their dog, JD, as the witness., James then legally adopted AJ at the Clark County Courthouse where he took his name as well. The three spent their time at a family beach house in Oceanside, OR, their ranch in Enterprise, OR, with family and friends hunting, fishing, back yard BBQ's, with AJ's baseball teams, boy scouts and church. James was not only AJ's dad, he was his best friend. One year he sponsored his t-ball team with his clothing company, Ridge Work Wear. The two shared the love of animals, the Great NW, hunting, fishing, all sports (especially hockey), and watching old westerns, you name it they did it. AJ and James even cut each others hair. When he was not in the woods or at a baseball game you could find him on his mother's couch eating her famous grilled tuna sandwiches., Amber and James decided to add on to their happy little family and welcomed two sheep, Dixie and Trixie, and a spunky bird hunting dog, Lodi. They also became pregnant Dec. 31, 2010. James was so confident they were pregnant he told his close friends on a beach trip that weekend that they were expecting., Not only was James good at everything he did from meeting people to being a real outdoor sportsman, he was also an avid antique collector. His passion for the old west and history had him on the computer for hours researching pieces he was looking to collect. James and Amber decided just the morning he died to write an old west book filled with outlaws, gambling, and exploration. Amber and AJ have decided to continue on with his wish and write it together dedicated to his memory., In the last few months of his life he spent more time with his brother Joel and helping him with his ever growing business, North Fork Resources. He couldn't be happier being with his other best friend, in the woods and helping family., He will be forever missed and leave a huge hole in the world where he shone so brightly. John "Pat" Mendenhall

John "Pat" Mendenhall was born in Seattle, WA on August 8, 1937 and passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, on May 28, 2011 in Kirkland, WA. Pat was one of seven children born to Walter and Lillian Mendenhall and grew up in Ballard, WA. In 1968, Pat, his wife, Charleen "Jackie" and their children moved to Duvall where Pat and Jackie have resided since., Pat worked at Frank's bakery, Buchan's Bakery and Langendorf Bakery before working for Lakeside Sand and Gravel and Cadman as a truck driver for 30 years. After a brief retirement, Pat decided to go back to work for Sutton Trucking. He was a teamster from 1962 to 2003 and also volunteered at the Duvall Fire Department for 16 years. Joseph Charles Arnold III

ARNOLD, Joseph Charles III, Our beloved J.C. has slipped the bonds of our earthly embraces to forever rest in the arms of Jesus Christ, his heavenly father. J.C. succumbed suddenly to an inoperable brain aneurysm. Despite his shortness of years he lived life to the fullest. He was born August 8, 1975 in Spokane, Washington to Charles and Cherie Arnold. A beautiful bright eyed baby boy would leave an imprint on the hearts of all who knew him. J.C. grew up in the residential area of Suncrest located at Nine Mile Falls where he attended kindergarten through 12th grade. He was a member of the first graduating class at Lakeside High School. He achieved numerous academic and athletic accolades including two Presidential Academic Achievement Awards from President Reagan. J.C. participated in a variety of sports to include soccer, baseball, basketball, tennis and varsity football. He maintained friendships with his teammates throughout his life. J.C. continued to enjoy a deep passion for sports to include Mariners, Seahawks, Eastern Eagle football and W.S.U. basketball. He also played rugby for a season with the Spokane Razorbacks. J.C. joined the, in 1993 to become an aviator. He was a member of Battery A, 1st Battalion, 14th Marines. During his service to the Marines his natural leadership qualities afforded him numerous accolades, awards and recognitions. He was a Marine to the core. J.C. was an articulate, well read and handsome gentleman whose passion for life and family was unequaled. His greatest joy was his young son Joseph who will remain the eternal smile in J.C.'s heart. J.C.'s brother Chris was his best buddy. The two were rarely seen apart. They could always count on one another for a good time. They will forever share the bonds of brotherhood. His sister Natalie was J.C.'s inspiration as he always admired her grace and tenacity. He was fiercely protective of his little sister. His hero was his father Chuck. J.C. took tremendous pride in following in his dad's footsteps. Together with his brother Chris the three formed CA Construction. J.C. was a compassionate man who loved all creatures great and small. He rescued his black German shepherd Lucy from the Humane Society while often wishing he could rescue all abandoned animals. Heaven must have needed some more humor because J.C. had the gift of making any situation funny. Joseph Charles is survived by his young son Joseph Charles IV; girlfriend Meagan McCarthy, her daughter Madeline McCarthy; parents Charles and Cherie Arnold; brother Christopher (Deanna) Arnold; sister Natalie (Dr. Reese) Riggin; grandparents Charles and Shirley Arnold; grandmother Joan Monforton; nephews Trystian Arnold and Cruz Riggin; niece Chevelle Riggin and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandfather Joseph F. Monforton, great-grandparents Ed and June Harding, Joseph C. Arnold and Violet Peterson. Kenneth Walter Frisk, 69, of Boise, Idaho, quietly passed away June 4, 2011, surrounded by his family., He was born October 6, 1941, in Valley City, North Dakota, the son of the late Margaret (Compson) and Walter Frisk. He was the oldest of six siblings. He married Patricia M. Davis on January 15, 1982., At a very young age, his family moved to Everett, WA, where he graduated from Everett High School in 1959. He went on to obtain his Bachelor of Arts degree from Western Washington State College in Bellingham, WA in 1965. Over the years he was employed as a school, , a sports coach, a bank employee, and a hardware sales manager. He retired from Evans Building Supply in Eagle, Idaho in 2008. For many years he and his wife, Pat, owned their own mobile heavy equipment painting business, Equipment Refinishers and later a franchise printing store, International Minute Press., He was an avid off-road motorcyclist, who rode hundreds of trails around the Pacific Northwest over the course of three decades. A member of the treasure Valley trail Machine Association, he passed on his passion for riding to his wife Pat, four daughters and two grandsons. The family enjoyed many camping trips from the beaches of the Oregon Coast to the desert and mountains of Idaho. Fishing for trout and going to Bluegrass festivals were other favorite activities. he loved sports, and was an especially loyal fan of the Boise State University Broncos, long before they were world famous. During the years he and Pat spent on the road with their painting business, they greatly enjoyed traveling and exploring many nooks and crannies of the western United States and beyond. He will be remembered for loving his family, usually sitting quietly observing and smiling as the rest of the group carried on, whether by the campfire or at the kitchen table., He is survived by his wife, Pat; daughter, Ann Libengood, of Boise; daughter, Susan Marshall, of Westminster, CO; daughter, Dianna (Steve) Fathke, of Salem, OR; daughter, Michelle (Mick) Ekleberry, of Boise; grandson, Trevor Hill, of Glide, OR; grandson, Zach Davis, of Boise; sister, Louise (Jim) Bender, of Marysville; sister, Barbara Griffith, of Everett; sister, Betty (Dan) Christofferson, of Marysville; and sister, Bonnie Tanis, of Everett., The family is not holding public services., In lieu of flowers, the family requests continued support of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's research organizations.

Kent went home to say, "HI THERE, HO THERE" to Jesus on June 1, 2011 while surrounded by his family and friends. He had a strong six year battle with prostate /bone cancer. Kent was born on October 8, 1940 in Spokane, Washington., He graduated from North Central High School in 1958 at the top of his class. Kent served in the, training K-9 tracking and attack dogs. After completing his military service, he entered the grocery business, eventually leaving the retail side and entering the food brokerage side where he worked until his retirement. Kent was survived by his wife of nearly 40 years, Jeannie Amsden. He and Jeannie experienced life to its fullest whenever they were together, which was always! Kent cherished raising his four children; Scott Amsden (Jennifer Jacobs), Rob Amsden (Laura), Dawn Lenz (Dan) and Amanda Fehler (Matt). He raised all his children under the pillars of TRUTH, RESPECT and CONSIDERATION. One of Kent's best character traits was always being there for family and friends. Kent would be there whether it was helping with a simple home repair or inspiring a fellow cancer patient. Everyone who knew Kent or had contact with him felt his incredibly positive nature. All throughout his life he found personal enjoyment playing softball, basketball, golfing and fishing. Kim L. Beardsley von HOPFFGARTEN Kim died suddenly at the age of 54 on May 24, 2011. At the time she was living in Langley, BC on her Sanssouci Farm. Kim was born in Seattle on October 4, 1956 and lived on Vashon until she went away to college and married. Kim graduated 1975 valedictorian of her class at Vashon High school. While in school she played in the band and on the girls' basketball and tennis teams. Kim continued her education at Washington State University and graduated in 1980 with honors in her honors program and honors in her bachelor's program in Mechanical engineering. She was a member in the Engineering Honors Program and of Alpha Phi Sorority. Horses and dressage were a major part of Kim's life. She was a life member of the US Pony Club with an H A rating. In 1981 she participated in the Insilco competition, which was the first East West head to head competition for dressage riders in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and took top honors at the Grand Prix level. In 1982 she represented the US on the US Equestrian Team in the World Cup Dressage Championships on her horse Woodimix in Lausanne, Switzerland. In 1983 she won the West Coast Regional Dressage Championship at the Grand Prix level in California. In 1984 Kim married Dietrichvon Hopffgarten, someone who shared her love for horses and her dressage instructor. Kim is survived by her parents Jim and Marjorie Beardsley and her siblings Greg, Warren, and Melissa, her nephews Kevin, Chris and Brett Beardsley and many cousins and friends. Her husband Dietrich preceded Kim in death in 2006. A celebration of Kim's life will be held Saturday June 18, 2011 at 7pm at her Sanssouci home in Langley, BC. Passed away May 27th, 2011 with her family by her side. Leanna was born December 18th, 1936 to Anna and Irvin Voss in Spokane, Washington. On August 21st, 1952 she married Lyle Rosenau. A lifelong resident of Spokane, Leanna worked at the Broadway Truck Stop until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of the Rats and Cats, a member of the DAVA Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 9, and a member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church., Leanna was an excellent care giver, dedicating many years nursing her mother, husband and sister. She spent her summers at Clear Lake with friends and family fishing, swimming and cooking wonderful meals. Leanna enjoyed reading, dancing and loved her solitaire., Leanna is survived by her children Bill Rosenau (Janee Evans) and Dee (Duane) Yates; her grandchildren Alyson (Chris) Bunch, Nathan Yates, Rachael (Mike) Kincaid, Anna (Jim) Tsakarestos, Brandon Evans and Taylor Rosenau; great-grandchildren Ivey Rosenau-Shiel, Ryder and Harley Kincaid, Demetrios Tsakarestos and his baby sister who is on the way. Leanna is also survived by her sister Betty Cramer, a half-brother Willis Voss, and her brother-in-law Lester Rosenau, sister-in-law Genivieve Voss, numerous, dearly loved nieces, nephews, and adopted grandchildren, and one feisty feline, Cat Sister. Lorene VanBROCKLIN Lorene VanBrocklin passed away on May 19, 2011. She was born on October 13, 1939 in Bayard, New Mexico and lived in the Seattle. Lorene lived in the Seattle area for more than 60 years and graduated from Kent Meridian High School in 1958. She was a Master Judge for flower shows and was a member of the Evergreen Garden club for many years. She enjoyed judging flower shows, spending time with friends and family and traveling. She was preceded in death by her husband Roger VanBrocklin, daughter Meredith Garland and brother Roy White. Survived by her son, Walter Ray of Manchester, TN brother Gene White of Atascadero, CA and sister Nedra of Raymond, CA.She was the grandmother of five; Robert Ray, Sean Ray, Amy Esparza, Walker Garland and Colton Ray and a great-grandmother of three, Elahna, Leah and Grant.She will be laid to rest on Saturday, June 4, 2011 during a small gathering of family and close friends.

Born on May 24, 1936 in Denver, CO, Lowell Ingram passed away on June 4, 2011 in his home in Everett, WA at age 75., He is survived by his loving wife, Ruth Janet Ingram; and his children, Rick Arthur Ingram of Snoqualmie, WA and Andrea Lynn Ingram of Seattle, WA. He is also survived by brothers, Rev. Leslie Francis Ingram, Jr. of Houston, TX; Robert Lawrence Ingram of Charleston, SC, and Dr. Lloyd Henry Ingram of Charleston, SC., Lowell earned a B.A. at Seattle Pacific University and a Masters in Education at the University of Washington. He worked for the Seattle Public Schools as a teacher/counselor, where he received a Golden Acorn Award as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. He served at the University of Washington for 17 years as a counselor/advisor and a leader in multicultural workshops and seminars internationally. Lowell was a leader of an Operation Crossroads Africa (OCA) group in 1967 where university students built a three - room handmade brick schoolhouse in Ootsi, Botswana. He was a leader of a businessmen research group in Japan that was sponsored by the Lilly Foundation. For years, Lowell was a family/marriage counselor and an alcohol/drug counselor. He served on many boards of directors and, when he retired from the UW, he became a property manager for a large condominium association for 23 years., Throughout his life, Lowell loved to tell stories and had a wonderful sense of humor. He developed a counseling tool that was used by counselors and psychologists. He loved trains and vacationed by train whenever he could. Lowell was loved and cherished by his family and friends. M. Merle Pool

Entered into rest June 4, 2011 in Wenatchee. Merle was born September 18, 1918 on the farm in Lamont, WA to Claude and Vesta Shields. She graduated from Lamont High School, where she was an avid basketball player. She married Richard F. Pool in 1942 and they had two sons: Dennis and Don. They farmed in Lamont, WA until Richard's death. Merle lived five years at the Waterford in Spokane until she moved to Riverwest in Wenatchee in 2004. She has been a member of the Lamont grange since 1934 and the Order of Eastern Star since 1943. She loved to read, sew clothes for the grandchildren, garden her flowers and most of all follow her favorite sport of basketball. Preceding her in death were her husband, Richard F. Pool, her son Dennis Pool and her sister Mildred McCartan. Surviving include her son Donald (Barbara) Pool of Wenatchee, daughter in law Clarice Pool of St. John, her brother Henry Shields of Davenport, grandchildren: Travis Pool of Monroe, John Pool of Boise, Beth (Pool) Grider of Spokane Valley, two great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service will be held Saturday June 11, 2011 at Macabee Cemetery in Sprague, WA at 11:00 AM, concluded by vault interment. Mayme Spoelstra of Everett, WA passed away on Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at Bethany of Silver Lake from complications of Alzheimer's Disease., She was born at home at Clear Lake, (near Fort Benton), MT to Samuel and Alice (Venhuizen) Spoelstra on May 29, 1918. Mayme was the first of ten children., During the Depression, the family was forced to move to find work. They first settled in Oak Harbor, WA and later moved to Everett. When she was fourteen years old, her mother died and Mayme and the older siblings helped their father raise the younger children., Mayme graduated from Everett Christian School and Everett High School, and she took many business classes. She worked as a bank teller, librarian and for the State of Washington Department of Trade and Economic Development in Seattle., The family was very involved in Everett First Christian Reformed Church of which she was a member. Mayme had a talent for singing, especially songs of praise to her Lord and Savior., Although she never married, she greatly enjoyed her many nieces and nephews. RAFTER, Michael, Thomas, Entered his final rodeo "in the sky" on May 22, 2011. He was born June 29, 1938 in Seattle, WA to the late Michael J. and Patricia Rafter. He is survived by his wife, Joanie, of 33 years and five children; Deborah, Jim (Michele), Shawn, Stephanie and Katie; and two grandchildren, Mikala and Justin. He is also survived by his brother Tim (Judy) and sister Kathleen as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Also missed greatly by his dog and "pard" Bo. Mike always lived hard and loved huge. He was very active in 4-H and FFA and is still known as "Big Mike" and "Pops" to many. Mike loved a good rodeo, good whiskey and a good laugh. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, June 11, 2011 at 11:00 AM at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Medical Lake, WA. Father Jack Krier officiating. Nancy Norris, 74, of Ridgefield, WA, passed away on May 30, 2011. She was born in Akron, OH and raised in Bellview, CA., She enjoyed working with Shared Hope and was active at her church, Vista Community Church. She took in foster children, wanting to give them a chance for the future., She loved her family and spent all her time with them. Nick D. Jones

Nick passed away June 7, 2011 at home after a short battle with cancer. He was born December 13, 1949 in Pasco, WA the fourth of nine children to Margaret and Albert Jones. He graduated from North Central and was drafted in the service so he joined the Navy where he served as a corpsman at San Diego Naval Hospital and Whidbey Island Naval Base. Nick graduated from Spokane Falls Community College with an AA degree and attended EWU for one year. Nick is survived by his wife of 35 years Yvonne Arnzen and their four children, Alexander, Simon, Adrianne and Philip Arnzen-Jones and three granddaughters, Victoria, Emily and Aryannah. Nick has worked for the past 10+ years for Spokane Mental Health as a facilities technician. Previous to that he had worked as a Maintenance Manager for Union Bay, Forest Ridge School, and 13 years at Nordstrom, all in the Seattle area. Nick is survived by eight siblings, Steve, Vicki, Margie, Ray, Randy, Pat, Ted, Kelli, and their spouses. He is also survived by numerous in laws, nieces, nephews and mother-in-law Helen Arnzen. Nick was a good father, brother,grandfather and husband., A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday June 11, 2011 at 3pm at St. Francis of Assisi Hall, located at 1104 W. Norbert E. Bester

BESTER, Norbert E., Passed away on June 3, 2011, two years, three months, and four days before his 100th birthday. He was born on September 7, 1913 in Inver Grove, Minnesota to parents Charles and Christine Bester. Norbert graduated from South St. Paul High School and served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. National Guard. In 1938, he married the love of his life, Evelyn Schumann. Evelyn and Norbert were married for 65 years before her passing in 2003. A 65 year resident of Spokane, Norbert and Evelyn made Spokane their home in 1946 and together raised their family. Norbert worked as a truck driver for many years and owned two trucking companies before retiring in 1979. He was a member of Teamsters Local #690 and Trinity Lutheran Church. He and Evelyn enjoyed playing cards in their younger years, socializing, and traveling the US, Canada, and Europe. Norbert also enjoyed the Day Out For The Blind dances, bible study, but most of all he loved and enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, Douglas (Kathie) of Inver Grove, MN, Ned (Milaine), Les; daughter, Nancy (John) Thornton all of Spokane; sister, Betty Connor of Miami, FL; 18 grandchildren; and 42 great-grandchildren. Norbert was preceded in death by his parents, his loving wife Evelyn, a son, three brothers, and a sister. He left a wonderful legacy for generations to come of a good work ethic, kindness, and the love of God. Paula "Polly" J. Squiers, age 63, passed Tuesday, June 7, 2011 in Everett, Washington., Paula was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina April 30, 1948 to her birth parents, Paul R. Heape and Doris Bolen. In 1952, Doris married Myrt Charney and after adopting Paula, he became her father. The family was soon joined by Paula's sister and brother, Andrea and Michael. After living in Minnesota from 1955 to 1963, the family moved to Alaska in 1963, where Paula graduated from Juneau Douglas High School and went on to the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and Anchorage. It was there she met and eventually married Donald R. Squiers., Around 1976, Paula and Don left Alaska and moved to Everett, Washington where she had resided since. Paula was an educator and community volunteer and cared deeply for many organizations around the area., Paula leaves those who loved her: daughter, Clover M. Squiers (Hesse Phillips), of Medford, MA; father, Myrt Charney, of Missoula, MT; sister, Andrea (Arnie) Wetzstein, of Laughlin, NV; and brother, Michael (Joy McKenna) Charney, of Woodland Park, CO; step-sister, Jacquelyn (Andres) Serrano, of Anchroage, AK; her family of the Baha'i Community; her adopted grandson, Gabriel; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, located in Washington, Alaska, California, Indiana, South Carolina and elsewhere. Ray Anderson

Ray A. ANDERSON Raymond A. Anderson passed away surrounded by his family on June 3rd, 2011 at the age of 104. Ray was born January 28, 1907 in Sheldon, North Dakota to Frank and Jessie Anderson. He moved with his family to Puyallup and attended the University of Washington where he was a Theta Chi. In 1939 he married Helen Frances Wilson who preceded him in death. With his dad and brother, Ray built a log home on Meydenbauer Bay. He was an avid water skier and loved to row. Ray was in the Army and stationed at Pearl Harbor during WWII. After the war, with his brother's help, Ray built a home on Killarney Way in Bellevue where he lived until moving to Covenant Shores on Mercer Island 18 years ago when he "got tired of the yard work". He also reluctantly parted with his red 1956 Mercedes 190 convertible. Ray worked in the printing trade and loved to travel which included driving trips to Mexico and Florida to visit Cuba. In the early 60's he founded Holiday House Travel Agency on Capitol Hill and continued to travel around the world. Ray was lean and fit and loved to walk for miles until he was 100. Ray is survived by his daughter, Paula Clapp (Bill), grandchildren Shelby Swanson (Tim Owens) of Seattle, Dean Swanson (Erxing Yang) of Beijing, Sherry Swanson (Bram Thrift) of Cle Elum as well as his sister Ruth Valenta and brothers Bob and Paul. At Ray's request there will only be a small private gathering. Ray's family would like to thank the wonderful caregivers at Covenant Shores and family and friends who have sent their love and prayers. Rea Thompson, 85, of Stanwood, died June 2, 2011. Rea was born on November 5, 1925 in Havre, MT., Rea enjoyed life to the fullest and always had a smile to give to others. She was so loving and kind and an encouragement to countless other people. Rea was the most fabulous cook, especially known for her cinnamon rolls., Rea is survived by her daughter, Lorie Overland and her husband, Steven Overland, as well as two grandsons, David Overland and Christopher Overland. She also has three great-grandchildren., Rea's husband, Gordon Thompson and her son, Stephen Thompson have preceded her to Heaven., Rea loved the Lord and was most thankful for the blessings of family and friends. Being disabled her entire life, she looked forward to being able to run in Heaven. Richard Paul Langlois, 78, of Everett passed away on May 9, 2011 from heart disease to be with his eternal Father. He was born August 29, 1932 in Seattle, WA the son of Paul and Mamie Langlois., He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia; son, Richard A. Langlois (Cindy); daughters, Kristi Kielow (Stephen) and Kathi Oxnevad (Steve, who passed away in 2009); grandchildren, Christopher Anthony, Stephanie Langlois Walls (James), Jenessia Anthony, Matthew Langlois, Michael Oxnevad (Rachel) and Lynsie Oxnevad; and great-grandchildren, Tiarra Langlois Walls, Jayden Langlois Walls, Mikaeia Oxnevad, Chase Hooten and Piper Oxnevad., Known as Dick or Pierre he was involved in South Everett Little League as a coach for several years and also Boy Scouts at many different levels. He retired from Scott Paper in 1991 after 36 years. In his retirement years, his wife and he traveled the U.S. He loved building and flying kites, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and also enjoyed wood carving. He had made statues and tie slides. Roger James Blum

June 3, 2011 Roger James Blum left us to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and to join the love of his life, his beloved wife of 59 years, Ruth, who preceded him in death on July 20, 2010., Roger was born to Ethel and Wesley Blum in Cedar Falls, Iowa on September 9, 1931. He was preceded in death by sisters Caroline Johnson and Ethel Abkes, and brothers Harold, Billy and Wesley Jr. He is survived by one brother, Robert Blum. Roger lied about his age to join the, where served proudly for 24 years. He served in Saudi Arabia, Spain, Italy, France, Morocco and the Vietnam conflict. When he retired from military service, he went to work for the USPS in Airway Heights, WA for 20 years. Roger also volunteered to set up and organize the Post Office at the Airway Heights Correctional Facility. During this time period, he also drove the shuttle van for the VA hospital. Roger's passion was the Strategic Air Command Unit and working with the B-52's. He received the "Good Conduct Medal" and several Good Conduct Ribbons. He received the "Gold Award Certificate of Appreciation" from the Airway Heights Correctional Facility. Roger also received an "Achievement Award" from the USPS and logged more than 11,000 volunteer hours with the DAV., Roger was dedicated to his country and his family. Daughters, Debra Lenius, Patricia Cruz (José), and son Robert Blum (Theresa). He had three children, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 3.5 great-great-grandchildren. In his failing health he was graciously cared for by his devoted granddaughter Penny Delaney. Roger would have loved to say "Good-Bye" and "Thank You" to all of his good friends at Northern Quest Casino for their kindness, friendship and generosity. He was a man among men who never questioned anyone's integrity and saw the good in all., On June 10, 2011, there will be an Honor Guard Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Medical Lake, WA at 2:15 pm followed by a Memorial Service at the First Church of the Nazarene at 2 pm Saturday June 11, 2011. Shiu Kit Louie

Passed away June 3, 2011 in Spokane, WA. Mr. Louie was born in Canton, China on November 19, 1917. He married and started his family. He fled China in the late 1940's to Hong Kong where he worked as an accountant for a construction firm and as a bookkeeper for another firm. He was able to move to the United States in 1971, staying in New Orleans then to San Francisco in 1972 and finally Spokane in 1974. He worked for a relative as a cook at Louie's Restaurant. He retired in 1984. He was always known as a hard worker and was very good with numbers. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and fishing in his spare time. He is survived by his children, Ken Louie of Seattle, WA, Wendy Louie of Seattle, WA, Linda Lee of Philadelphia, PA, Andy Louie of Spokane, WA, Rick Louie of Spokane, WA and Lisa Arnold of Spokane Valley, WA. There are 16 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Mr. Louie was preceded in death by his wife, Kam Sau in September 2009. Visitation will be held from 10 am until 6pm on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 N. Monroe. Sr. Rita Mary LYONS, CSJP Sister Rita Mary Lyons died peacefully on June 3, 2011 in Bellevue, WA. Sister Rita Mary was born on August 30, 1913 in Prior Lake, Minnesota. After graduating from Sedro Woolley High School in 1931 she attended the St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Bellingham, WA. She entered the community of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1934. Sister Rita Mary earned a B.S. degree from St. Louis University, an M.A. in education from Seattle University and an M.A. in religious education from Immaculate College, Los Angeles. For over 40 years Sister Rita Mary served as a nurse, instructor and supervisor in health care ministry in PeaceHealth in Bellingham and Wenatchee, WA and Eugene, OR. From 1977 through 2001 she ministered as a hospital chaplain at Ketchikan General Hospital, in Ketchikan, AK. Since retirement in 2001 Sr. Rita Mary lived at St. Mary-on-the-Lake, Bellevue, WA. Sr. Rita Mary celebrated her 75th Jubilee as a Sister of St. Joseph of Peace in 2010. Sr. Rita Mary has touched our lives in countless ways: her dedication in serving others, her deep faith and warm hospitality, and her peace-filled embrace of death. Treophia L. BURKS January 11, 1922 ~ May 25, 2011 Treophia L. Burks 89, passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2011 in Seattle Washington. Treophia was born in North Little Rock Arkansas. Her parents were Benjamin and Samantha Madison. Treophia married William Burks. William went to Glory in 1982. Treophia graduated from Scripio A. Jones High School in North Little Rock, Arkansas. During World War II the U.S. government trained many young women to work in factories while the men were off to war. Treophia with a group of courageous young women moved to Seattle to begin working at Boeing Aircraft Co. Treophia was an original "Rosie The Riveter". She retired after 45 years of service. Prior to the onset of Alzheimer's Treophia had been a supportive member of New Hope Baptist Church, Seattle, Washington. She contributed to charities, enjoyed music, Chinese checkers, puzzles, dancing, reading and learning something new. Treophia leaves behind (1) daughter, Delores Burks of Seattle, Washington and (1) grandson, Da'Venche J. Burks of Redlands, California. She also leaves to mourn her passing a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at Butterworth- Arthur A. Wright Chapel 520 W. Virginia Alderson Talcott

While attending the University of Washington, Virginia met Richard "Dick" Noyes Talcott, Sr. After marrying in 1941, they settled in Olympia, where Dick worked in the family business, Talcott Jewelers. Together they raised five children, teaching all of them to ski on the rope tows at Paradise, Mt. Rainier. Virginia was passionate about gardening and playing golf, and was an avid collector of antiques and glass. She was an active member of numerous volunteer and special interest organizations, including St. Mary's Guild, St. Peter Hospital Auxiliary (Charter Member), PEO, the Governor's Mansion Foundation Board, the Early American Glass Club, Bess French Orthopedic Guild, and the Washington State Capitol Museum. She made many friends through these community involvements. She and Dick were also members of St. John's Episcopal Church, the Olympia Golf and Country Club, the Tacoma Golf and Country Club, the Pacific Northwest Ancient Skiers, and the Olympia Ski Club.

Bill attended Roosevelt High School in Seattle and achieved the rank or Eagle Scout. Soon after graduation Bill joined the Navy. When finishing his tour he attended Stanford University and New York School of Design. While at Stanford he was editor of the Stanford Daily. After completing his education he joined his father in the family business, Swigart Furniture. In the following years Bill opened several furniture stores and a wholesale showroom. Later he represented furniture and clock companies. Collecting and selling art and antiques was a passion of Bill's and he continued doing it into retirement. Bill was an avid sports fan and golfer. He loved spending time with his family on Camano Island. Bill is survived by his wife and forty year companion, Gwynn, sons, Torry Drysdale (Norma) Tad Drysdale (Melissa) Robert Swigart (Norma), Daughters, Darcy Drysdale (Steve Edlund), Sharon Bethel, Susan Brakstad (Mark), and Sally Simpson (Rich). William Sidlow, "Bill",, a longtime resident of Glenrose peacefully passed away at home with his wife Alice and daughter Stacey by his side on June 1, 2011., Bill was born in Chicago, IL to Edward and Ida Sidlow on November 1, 1934. They moved to Burbank, CA when he was 8 years old. He graduated from Burbank High School and entered in the Air Force, serving 4 1/2 years. He earned the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, Air Medal and Air Crew Members Badge. He was stationed in Japan for 3 years, transporting wounded servicemen. When he came home, he was sent to Fairchild Air Force Base. It was at a USO dance that he met his future wife, Alice Farrell. They were married August 24, 1956 and had 55 years together., Their union produced 3 children: William K. (Linda) Atlanta, GA; Suzanne Larson (Damion) Tampa, FL; Stacey Unruh (Shawn) Bothell, WA. His pride and joy were his 3 grandchildren: Alexandrya Matthes, David Sidlow and Sara Harmon. He is survived by his wife Alice, his 3 children and 3 grandchildren; a brother Sheldon Sidlow, and sister Carol, both of CA, and nieces and nephews., Bill was a natural gas controller for Pacific Gas Transmission Co., for 26 years. He was the controller on duty when the gates were opened at Kings Gate, Canada and the natural gas started flowing to CA., Bill loved to camp and fish and he was always puttering around his 10 acre farm. When the kids were growing up, he raised cows, horses, sheep, pigs, chickens, ducks, rabbits, assorted dogs and cats. He even had a milk cow for awhile, until she got in the way of fishing and he sold her., Bill was noted for his sense of humor and the jokes and stories he could tell. He always said, that if he had a head stone it would read: "HE MADE ME LAUGH.", He was a member of the Glenrose Association and the Spokane Southeast Lions. He looked forward to working at the Spokane Interstate Fair each year in the Lost Children's Booth., A celebration of his life will be held at the Moran Prairie Grange on July 16th at 11AM. Winnifred Elizabeth Riley

Winnie Riley, 87, of Arlington, WA, passed away Friday, May 27, 2011 with family by her side. Winnie was born November 26, 1923, the daughter of John and Mary (O'Neil) Riley in Renton, WA., Winnie had a warm heart and generous spirit. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Winnie worked at the Pullman Company for over twenty years before going to work at the Bellevue School District where she worked for many years before retiring., Winnie is preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Riley; her sisters, Mariah Monaghan, Margaret Donckers, Anne Benanto, and Veronica Monahan; as well as her nephews, Neil Parker, Terry Monahan, and Kevin Monahan., Numerous nieces and nephews survive Winnie., A Rosary will be said Saturday June 11, 2011 at 12:30 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Arlington, WA. A Memorial Mass will follow at 1 p.m.
