John W. Haigh

John W. HAIGH An ardent newspaperman to the very end, John would put on coat and beret, shake his 92-year-old bones, and push his walker through icy rains or snow to bring in the morning paper. It wasn't so much the news he was looking for as a lost vowel or misused verb that had him bring out the red pencil! John W. Haigh died Thursday, January 13, after a gallant three and one half year battle with kidney disease. He was born August 18, 1918 to Dr. Frank and Mabel Haigh in Walla Walla. Dr. Haigh was a chemistry professor at Whitman College, so family life was intertwined with other faculty families. John's first venture in publication was when he and friends put out the occasional 'Semi-Monthly Gazette'. A kind mother printed it on a mimeograph. During college years he worked on the 'Pioneer.' Later, on the Union-Bulletin he was paid $12.00 per week. At last he worked at the Milwaukee Journal for several years. After World War II he decided the Northwest was his true home and found a job at the Yakima Herald-Republic. At that time the building of hydroelectric dams was at its peak and John immersed himself in learning all he could about them. Also about then, Jean Lanham was hired as a new reporter. John wasted no time asking her to marry him and one week later they were married. Weekends were spent visiting dams. As their three daughters were born, they, too, joined the weekend outings. In 1956 John was awarded an Ogden-Reed fellowship by the New York Herald-Tribune. He was to study dams in Western Europe. We packed up the family and took the train to New York to catch the Queen Elizabeth to France. Visiting dams in Europe was much the same as doing it here. John did his work while his family puttered around nearby paths or parks, ending each day with a picnic. The Seattle Times offered John a reporting job when we returned to the U.S. He worked for the Times 27 years before retiring in 1983. John felt he had a great life - families that lived near him and saw him often, good friends to work with and a job he enjoyed, and his beloved basset who is devastated, as are we all! He leaves his wife, Jean, after 62 years, his daughters Jeanette Hagen (Ken), Virginia Immanuel (Jacob), Katy Haigh (Mark Wilkins); grandchildren Camille, Rudy, Henry, Jessa, Shayne, Tyler, Susheel; and five great grandchildren. His sister, Helen Mills of Portland, also survives. A memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 22, in the Chapel at Plymouth Congregational Church (Sixth Avenue and University Street). Parking is available in Plymouth garage. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, P.O. Box 6014 Albert Lea, MN 56007.

Joseph Eugene McCarthy

Joseph Eugene McCARTHY In loving memory of Joseph (Joe) Eugene McCarthy. Joe, 91, passed away on January 9, 2011 at his home in Seattle, Washington. He was born on July 8, 1919 in Butte, Montana and started his adult life working in the copper mines of Butte. He met, and married Barbara Nordstrom of Butte in September 1952. Joe started work as a Teamster for Mutual Materials after the war and retired in 1984 after 37 years of service. He is preceded in death by Barbara. Joe's belief in God, the Church and himself gave him the strength to live his life independently to the end, made easier by the loving, and sometimes prodding, support of his family. Always quick with a joke and quicker with a smile, his easygoing nature belied his underlying stubbornness that can only be a result of a man who worked hard and never took anything in life for granted. He enriched all that he came into contact with and will be greatly missed. Joe is survived by his daughter Willa Price, sons Joseph McCarthy and Michael McCarthy, sister Mary Tritica, son-in-law Richard Price, daughter-in-law Aneth McCarthy, granddaughter Manuela, grandson Samuel, and loving cat Phillipe. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, 01/21/2011 at St. Benedicts, 1805 N. 49th St., Seattle, WA 98103. His ashes will be laid to rest at 1:00 pm at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery, 205 NE 205th St., Shoreline, WA 98155. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to The Seattle Humane Society.

Kenneth Lee Black

With over 23 years of service to the City of Olympia as a community development coordinator, Ken leaves a lasting legacy with over $10 million in federal, state and local funding invested in housing, social service and economic opportunities for low income residents. Anyone who drives into Olympia and sees the "All America City" signs, walks by the Boardwalk Apartments for seniors on their way to the Farmers Market, plays in Lions or Bigelow Park, is enjoying his legacy to the city he loved. Ken was instrumental in helping revive downtown Olympia in the early '80s with projects that brought abandoned buildings back to life, like the historic Elks Building apartments overlooking Sylvester Park, and turning the old Miller's Department Store into the Stuart Place Apartments atop the ever popular Starbucks. We will treasure our walks in downtown as we see Ken everywhere.

Patricia Jane Curran

Patricia Jane CURRAN 1933~2011 Patricia "Pat" Jane Curran passed away at the age of 77 on January 15th, 2011, after a short bout with lung cancer. She lived in Kent, Washington for almost 50 years, where she recently reigned as Queen of Kent (Old timers' division). Pat was born in Spokane, Wash ington on September 25, 1933 to Doris and Wallace Phillips. In the early 1940s, they lived in Chewe lah, Washington, where her par ents both had multiple jobs, best of all running the local movie the ater. Pat and her brother Wally saw every new movie, with free popcorn and candy to boot. Pat spent her summers at Uncle Debs' wheat ranch in Pomeroy, Washington. She graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington, and thereafter the University of Washington with a teaching degree. Pat was married in 1955 to Charles Peter "Pete" Curran from Hillyard, Washington, and they were always known as Pete and Pat. A selfless, organized wife and mother, she raised eight kids with Pete. Her infectious laugh was cherished by her fami ly and friends. Pat and Pete made travel possible for their family to attend frequent reunions, allow ing the young, far flung cousins to become good friends. They brought their large brood with them on an epic trip to Europe in 1979, arriving in each town with out reservations. Pat was a strong Catholic, long time parishioner and lay minister at Holy Spirit Parish in Kent, and with Pete served the needy of all beliefs through St. Vincent De Paul. As a community organizer, Pat worked behind the scenes to get things done. She spearheaded downtown Kent development through the Kent Downtown Part ners. She was an early supporter of Kent's Saturday Market, one of the first of these now-ubiquitous local farmers and crafts mar kets. She was a fearsome Scrabble player and crossword fan; she wrote and published poetry with an edge: "Here, behind the marigolds, a cat with one eye has been tossing a limp mouse into the air all evening" (from "Hiding in the Garden") Pat was an arts promoter, and with Pete, brought the Blind Boys of Alabama to Kent as well as oth er performing artists. She was a Washington State Arts Commis sioner and an officer of the North west Renaissance poetry organi zation. She was a card carrying member of the National Organi zation for Women and diehard Democrat. Pat was sprightly and open to new people, indeed a collector of friends; organizing her walking group, gathering with her book group and high school friends, playing tennis until three months ago with yet another circle of women. Pat and Pete were adventure trav elers, trekking as young seniors to Cuba, Egypt and Vietnam. She served and donated to many candidates and causes, including St. Vincent de Paul and Chil dren's Orthopedic. Pat will be greatly missed by her husband, Pete Curran, and her children Keelin (Jack), Sheila (Henry), Marcy (Rod), Betsey (Jonathan), Brendan (Amy), Mary (Dean), and Megan (Eric). STANLEY DUANE PIERCE

He was born March 20, 1926, to William Lee and Jennie Otelie Pierce in Lead, South Dakota. Older brother, Gordon Lyle was there to welcome him. Two sisters followed in later years (Joyce Arlene and Bonnie Lee). His younger years were spent in S. Dakota, Wyoming and Utah as his dad sought work in the oil fields. As a teenager, he moved to Portland, Oregon (via motorcycle) and eventually to Pasco where he and his dad lived the summer of 1942 in a tin trailer. Finley was home for a year and then his parents bought the house with the stone foundation on Edison Street (sight unseen) in West Kennewick, where he lived until graduating from KHS in 1944. He joined the Army Air Corps and was stationed in Florida., Following his military service, he was introduced to our mother, Eugena Pierce, by her brother, Kenneth Schmidt. They married in 1946 and raised four children: Pam, Stan, Phyllis and Cindy. They lived in Kennewick all their married lives until moving to Ferndale 10 years ago., Dad was a carpenter for most of his life, building several of the homes we lived in. He spent several years in the Maintenance Department at WPPSS, retiring in the mid 80's. Although his livelihood was carpentry and maintenance, his love was automobiles, so much, that he built a pole building on his property in Kennewick and built yet another in Ferndale. He could spend many hours tinkering on his cars or some sort of equipment. He must have had 5 stars by his name from automotive mail order catalogues Packages of all sizes were delivered frequently to the Pierce home., He restored several vehicles: Cadillac's, a 1949 Ford pickup, 1970 Ford Ranchero, Red Ford Granada, a Volkswagen with a wind-up key on the back, several 1940's era tractors and many others. His final project was a 1925 Model T with license plates - 25 T 4 2. The 1949 Ford pickup was My4T9R., Dad also enjoyed collecting guns and had reloading equipment set up at home for years. One of his later joys was to take the family out to the shooting range. He loved a good joke and would tell stories with great finesse. He would laugh so hard that tears would flow down his cheeks. He mastered the silent laugh eyes closed, mouth open, shoulders shaking no sound. Often, we found dad, son, sons in law and grandsons around the kitchen counter retelling old stories laughing, laughing, laughing. Dad also enjoyed some unusual foods - buttermilk, jalapenos, pickled pig's feet, tapioca, sardines, and he would introduce these items to unsuspecting family members and laugh., On any given weekend morning, he might call to gather the family and head out to breakfast. 'Throw some clothes on and order up! Dad's treat.' There really wasn't much he didn't love about being surrounded by his family, kids, grandkids, great grandkids. He thanked God daily for his family., 10 years ago, mom and dad moved to Ferndale, WA where they lived on 2 {1/2} green acres. He always wanted a parcel of land with a stream running through it. Mom and dad thoroughly enjoyed that home., Preceding him in death are his parents, William Lee and Jennie Otelie Pierce, his sister, Joyce Arlene McKune, brother, Gordon Lyle Pierce and his kind, loving and attentive wife, Eugena. He leaves behind his sister, Bonnie Lee Godsey (Hendersonville, N. C) daughter, Pamela Janean (Marv) Purvis, Richland, son, Stanley Paul, Kennewick, daughter, Phyllis Jolene (Maurice ) Stinn, Mt. Vernon, daughter, Cynthia Joanne (Jim) Petrie, Ferndale, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren Bradley (Leisha) and children,, Andrew (Amy) and Cole, Peyton and Evan, Stephanie and children, Candice and son, Tyler (special friend, Veronica), Kyle Duane (special friend, Megan), Austin, Tajanna, Lindsay, Samantha, Katie, Andy, and special people, Denine Barton and young friend, Leo. His humor, love and generosity will be missed by all.
