Donna Jean Elmer

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 1:00 PM

Donna Jean Elmer, a longtime Wenatchee resident, passed away quietly Thursday, January 13, 2011, at Highline Nursing Home, after a three year battle with dementia at the age of 84. She was a remarkable wife, mother, grandmother and friend, who touched many lives. Donna was born on September 27, 1926, to Felix and Mary Mickelson at Wilson Creek, WA, where they lived until she was three years old.

Donna Smiley

Donna was born to Artie and Florence Shebal, June 7, 1930 in Los Angeles, CA. While a baby, her parents, along with older brother, Leroy, moved to Escondido. Her father purchased Twin Palms Dairy. She grew up on the dairy, played with farm animals and helped milk the cows. Donna graduated from Escondido High School., Donna met the love of her life one Sunday morning at the Four Square Church in Escondido. She introduced herself and asked Dave Smiley to come over for a cup of coffee after the church service. She made a great cup of coffee -- Dave and Donna eloped six weeks later in Yuma, Arizona., Donna had four children in a span of seven years. Three sons and a daughter. Being a mother was a job she did well. For years she supported her three sons in various sports. She spent hundreds, maybe thousands, of hours driving to and from games, then sitting in the bleachers supporting and cheering for her favorite player. When not involved in Smiley family sports, she taught her daughter to sew, cook and shop. She had complete confidence her children would be happy adjusted adults. She loved them, advised them, always had a hug ready and a shoulder to cry on. Weekends were busy at Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido where she was a Deaconess and participated in multiple church activities., Dave and Donna moved to Marysville, WA in 1993. She loved to fish and camp at Lake Curlew with good friends from church. Many evenings were spent chatting around the camp fire and playing Chicken Foot. She loved to laugh. Donna enjoyed living in the beautiful Northwest with lots of trees and lots of rain. They attended First Baptist Church in Marysville., Through her life, there was one clear vision. It was her unwavering faith in God. Donna was diagnosed with liver cancer in 1999. She always seized the opportunity to testify her faith to surgeons, family physicians, nurses, therapists, whomever would listen. She was alive because God was taking care of her! Recently, she was diagnosed with dementia. While suffering with this disease, it gave her a new opportunity to testify her faith to the care center nurses and aids. She lived by her faith and her love of God., Donna's faith was also reflected in the great love she had for her husband of 56 years. Never did two people show more love and affection. Their selfless devotion to each other continues to be an inspiration to their many family members and friends. She will be greatly missed., Donna is preceded in death by her brother, Leroy Shebal., Donna is survived by her husband, Dave; children, David, of Ketchikan, AK, Carol (Jack), of Los Altos, CA, Steven (Antoinette), of Escondido, CA, Dennis (Pam), of Arlington, WA; and sister-in-law, Jane Shebal, of Escondido, CA. She has 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren., A celebration of Donna's life is planned for 2 p.m., Saturday, January 22nd at the First Baptist Church in Marysville.

John W. Haigh

John W. HAIGH An ardent newspaperman to the very end, John would put on coat and beret, shake his 92-year-old bones, and push his walker through icy rains or snow to bring in the morning paper. It wasn't so much the news he was looking for as a lost vowel or misused verb that had him bring out the red pencil! John W. Haigh died Thursday, January 13, after a gallant three and one half year battle with kidney disease. He was born August 18, 1918 to Dr. Frank and Mabel Haigh in Walla Walla. Dr. Haigh was a chemistry professor at Whitman College, so family life was intertwined with other faculty families. John's first venture in publication was when he and friends put out the occasional 'Semi-Monthly Gazette'. A kind mother printed it on a mimeograph. During college years he worked on the 'Pioneer.' Later, on the Union-Bulletin he was paid $12.00 per week. At last he worked at the Milwaukee Journal for several years. After World War II he decided the Northwest was his true home and found a job at the Yakima Herald-Republic. At that time the building of hydroelectric dams was at its peak and John immersed himself in learning all he could about them. Also about then, Jean Lanham was hired as a new reporter. John wasted no time asking her to marry him and one week later they were married. Weekends were spent visiting dams. As their three daughters were born, they, too, joined the weekend outings. In 1956 John was awarded an Ogden-Reed fellowship by the New York Herald-Tribune. He was to study dams in Western Europe. We packed up the family and took the train to New York to catch the Queen Elizabeth to France. Visiting dams in Europe was much the same as doing it here. John did his work while his family puttered around nearby paths or parks, ending each day with a picnic. The Seattle Times offered John a reporting job when we returned to the U.S. He worked for the Times 27 years before retiring in 1983. John felt he had a great life - families that lived near him and saw him often, good friends to work with and a job he enjoyed, and his beloved basset who is devastated, as are we all! He leaves his wife, Jean, after 62 years, his daughters Jeanette Hagen (Ken), Virginia Immanuel (Jacob), Katy Haigh (Mark Wilkins); grandchildren Camille, Rudy, Henry, Jessa, Shayne, Tyler, Susheel; and five great grandchildren. His sister, Helen Mills of Portland, also survives. A memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 22, in the Chapel at Plymouth Congregational Church (Sixth Avenue and University Street). Parking is available in Plymouth garage. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, P.O. Box 6014 Albert Lea, MN 56007.

Patricia Jane Curran

Patricia Jane CURRAN 1933~2011 Patricia "Pat" Jane Curran passed away at the age of 77 on January 15th, 2011, after a short bout with lung cancer. She lived in Kent, Washington for almost 50 years, where she recently reigned as Queen of Kent (Old timers' division). Pat was born in Spokane, Wash ington on September 25, 1933 to Doris and Wallace Phillips. In the early 1940s, they lived in Chewe lah, Washington, where her par ents both had multiple jobs, best of all running the local movie the ater. Pat and her brother Wally saw every new movie, with free popcorn and candy to boot. Pat spent her summers at Uncle Debs' wheat ranch in Pomeroy, Washington. She graduated from Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington, and thereafter the University of Washington with a teaching degree. Pat was married in 1955 to Charles Peter "Pete" Curran from Hillyard, Washington, and they were always known as Pete and Pat. A selfless, organized wife and mother, she raised eight kids with Pete. Her infectious laugh was cherished by her fami ly and friends. Pat and Pete made travel possible for their family to attend frequent reunions, allow ing the young, far flung cousins to become good friends. They brought their large brood with them on an epic trip to Europe in 1979, arriving in each town with out reservations. Pat was a strong Catholic, long time parishioner and lay minister at Holy Spirit Parish in Kent, and with Pete served the needy of all beliefs through St. Vincent De Paul. As a community organizer, Pat worked behind the scenes to get things done. She spearheaded downtown Kent development through the Kent Downtown Part ners. She was an early supporter of Kent's Saturday Market, one of the first of these now-ubiquitous local farmers and crafts mar kets. She was a fearsome Scrabble player and crossword fan; she wrote and published poetry with an edge: "Here, behind the marigolds, a cat with one eye has been tossing a limp mouse into the air all evening" (from "Hiding in the Garden") Pat was an arts promoter, and with Pete, brought the Blind Boys of Alabama to Kent as well as oth er performing artists. She was a Washington State Arts Commis sioner and an officer of the North west Renaissance poetry organi zation. She was a card carrying member of the National Organi zation for Women and diehard Democrat. Pat was sprightly and open to new people, indeed a collector of friends; organizing her walking group, gathering with her book group and high school friends, playing tennis until three months ago with yet another circle of women. Pat and Pete were adventure trav elers, trekking as young seniors to Cuba, Egypt and Vietnam. She served and donated to many candidates and causes, including St. Vincent de Paul and Chil dren's Orthopedic. Pat will be greatly missed by her husband, Pete Curran, and her children Keelin (Jack), Sheila (Henry), Marcy (Rod), Betsey (Jonathan), Brendan (Amy), Mary (Dean), and Megan (Eric). Her beloved son Colin died in 1983. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, Claire, Paloma, Colum, Melanie, Mackenzie, Delaney, Kevin, Katya, Beau, Graham, Declan, Dylan, Marlena, Audrey, Camille, Althea, Augie, Otis and Olivia, a great grandchild, Stazzi James, and her two brothers Wally and Jay Phillips. Funeral services for Pat Curran will be held at Holy Spirit Church, 310 3rd Ave. So. in downtown Kent, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday January 22, 2011. A reception celebrating Pat's life will be held at the church hall following the funeral service. The Curran Family encourages donations in lieu of flowers to St. Vincent De Paul. Please send checks to: SDVP, 310 3rd Ave. So., Kent, WA 98032.
