Becky Anne Bancroft

BANCROFT, Becky Anne, With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, Becky Anne Bancroft, who left this earth after an astounding show of strength, perseverance, and determination. Becky leaves behind a multitude of proud family members, friends, and loved ones. She is survived by her loving husband William (Billy) Bancroft; daughter, Erin Bancroft (and boyfriend Jon "Eddy" Edwards); and sons, Cory Bancroft and Casey Bancroft (and girlfriend, Natalie Braham), all of Spokane, WA; her siblings: Sandy of Reno NV; Charlie of Fresno, CA; Wendy (and husband Scott) of Mukilteo, WA; Patty of Ogden, UT; Wally of Soda Springs, ID; Becky enjoyed special closeness and bond to Billy's siblings: Bonnie of Spokane, WA; Cathy of Spokane Valley, WA; Chuck of Seattle, WA; Chris (and wife Jennifer) of Valley Center, CA; Laurie (and husband Gary) of Greenacres, WA; and Gus of Spokane WA; a precious grandson due in June; and a vast array of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends, all whose lives were positively impacted by Becky's presence. She was preceded in death by her parents, Evelyn Wilkes of Ogden, UT; Floyd Wadman of Spokane, WA; Harley and Louise Bancroft of Greenacres, WA; sister in law and friend, Carol Aguillion; and treasured pets: Pup, Cain, Cool, and Maynard. Becky's time was spent landscaping and gardening, and her gardens were impressive and flourished under her care. She was fit and beautiful, inside and out; and both animals and children flocked to her (She is especially missed by her boxer, Mabel). Becky enjoyed photography, with a focus on sunrises and sunsets; kept a beautiful home; and took pride in treating all who entered it like family, offering hugs and a listening ear to anyone who needed her. Becky adored the Christmas season, and decorating for the holidays was the highlight of her year. She was a talented chef, and thoroughly enjoyed cooking meals like lasagna and spaghetti. She relished all kinds of music, spending much of her time listening to her husband's bands and dancing. She was also currently learning to play piano. Becky's greatest source of joy came from spending time with her family; sharing a day on the boat with loved ones; reading a good mystery novel; watching a romantic comedy; cheering on the Seattle Seahawks (or cursing at them); basking in the sun; and having a good laugh. Her humor and wit were sharp as a tack, even in the end; and her endurance and determination were a source of motivation and awe to her family. The last three months of her life were spent in the ICU at the U of W Medical Center in Seattle, being only the third person in the nation to receive liver dialysis, and opening up doors for future transplant candidates. Countless lives will be saved because of her perseverance. She was an absolute champion, and encouraged all who knew her by never giving up while waiting for her liver/kidney transplant. Becky's family asks everyone to educate themselves on organ donation, and to become registered organ donors. The legacy Becky leaves behind is that of loyalty, resolution, and tenacity. She was a blessing to all who were privileged to know her, and will continue to be an inspiration for generations to come. She will be forever missed. Memorial service for Becky will be held at Thornhill Valley Chapel, 1400 S. Pines Rd., Spokane Valley, WA, at 2pm on Saturday, February 12th.

Joseph McDonnal

Joseph Edward McDONNAL Joe McDonnal was born in Pueblo, Colorado, to Flora and William McDonnal on July 10, 1931. The family moved to Pendleton, Oregon, in Joe's childhood, and then settled permanently in Corvallis, Oregon. After high school, Joe attended Whitman College in Walla Walla, then joined the U.S., and served in the, . Joe finished his studies at the, , where he received a Bachelors of Arts in General Sciences. Joe worked with Jim Crissey of Crissey Flowers during that time and pursued his decorating talents at the hand of a master. When Joe graduated university in 1958, he departed for New York, where he continued to work in the floral decorating business under the prominent house of Judith Garden. Joe then opened his own flower shop in Manhattan called The Gazebo, which was well received and a spiritual success. When his day's decorating work was finished, Joe found his way into the catering kitchen of the Plaza Hotel, and began his professional career as a cook, chef and caterer. After nine years in New York, Joe took a vacation to Spain intended for six weeks, and stayed for nine years. Joe settled in Marbella on the Costa del Sol, and opened a restaurant called El Oasis, followed by another called El Platanal. After nine years, the drought in Spain got him down, and he longed for a good old Northwest rainstorm. Joe returned to Seattle, and was attracted to the Pike Place Market, which was under renovation at that time. He leased a space in the Corner Market Building, designed it exquisitely, and opened Market Place Caterers in 1976, a restaurant, private dining room and catering business. Joe's reputation grew quickly, with word of mouth always being his best advertising. In 1989 Joe began pursuing his final dream of establishing a private dining club with catering facilities, which he accomplished in The Ruins with its opening in 1993. After founding this sizable venture Joe continued to work tirelessly in the business, designing and executing his catering work until his health demanded his departure from the stove in August, 1998. Joe continued to work in an administrative capacity until his full retirement a few years ago as his health declined further. Joe succumbed to pneumonia on January 31 in Palm Springs, California. Joe is survived by a large and loving family: Virginia Wyman, his spouse of 32 years; sister Maribel Cadmus of Salem, Oregon; brother Bill McDonnal and his wife Marianne of Los Altos, California; brother Fred McDonnal and his wife Marie of McMinnville, Oregon; ten nieces and nephews, one deceased; twenty-one great-nieces and nephews; four great-great- nieces and nephews; and numerous cousins.
