David Dirickson "Dave" Hunt

David (Dave) Dirickson HUNT November 22, 1951~January 11, 2011 Long time community organizer and citizen activist, David D. Hunt of Weston Mountain, Oregon passed away suddenly of an aneurysm on January 11, 2011. He was 59. Dave was born in Salina, Kansas on November 22, 1951 to Joyce and James 'Bob' Hunt. He graduated from Salina High School in 1969 and attended college in Texas and Kansas. Dave moved to Salem, Oregon in July 1977 and spent twenty-seven years in Salem, where he made enduring contributions to the State of Oregon, to his community, and to the world. Dave cultivated a career in public service and activism, which focused on alternative energy and transportation, conflict resolution and citizen diplomacy to promote world peace. Dave founded the Salem-Simferopol (Ukraine) Sister City Association and worked for many years to improve communication between Americans and Soviets through a variety of channels that included initiating and coordinating three U.S. / U.S.S.R. Sister City Conferences in the 1980's. Dave served as Executive Director for the Salem chapter of the Nobel Prize- winning group 'Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR).' In 1994, his work with PSR earned him the prestigious Broad Street Pump Award for 'outstanding local contributions to public service and activism.' Dave taught conflict resolution in various capacities that included middle school, high school and college-level instruction. Dave founded the Marion County Neighbor-to-Neighbor Community Mediation Program and produced educational materials for Willamette University's Center for Dispute Resolution and the American Bar Association. He developed and implemented an award-winning model peer mediation program at North Salem High School, which earned him the Salem-Keizer Public School District's award for Outstanding Special Project in 1994. Dave was a passionate environmentalist and he played a vital role in the successful efforts to preserve Opal Creek. He also worked for many years as a trail crew member with Friends of Breitenbush Cascades. Dave later created an outdoor education and adventure program for low-income children where the kids affectionately referred to him as the 'Wilderness Boss.' Dave loved the wilderness and outdoor recreation and was proud to be an 'adopted' Oregonian who relished in exploring the state's diverse natural beauty. He was an avid fly fisherman, skier, and hiker who introduced many friends and acquaintances to the joy of the outdoors. He was a bike rider and bicycle advocate and authored the first Salem Bicycle Map. In 1973, Dave completed a 600-mile bike trip from Kansas to Colorado, crossing Trail Ridge Road at 12,000 feet elevation. Dave was a multi-sport athlete in high school and college, who enjoyed playing and coaching sports, especially tennis. In the 1990's, Dave served as Assistant Men's Tennis Coach at Willamette University and as the Head Boy's Tennis Coach at North Salem High School, where he was honored as Coach of the Year in 1997 for the Valley League 4A. In 2000, Dave became a part of the Breitenbush Hot Springs, maintaining and upgrading the various infrastructure systems for this unique alternative geothermal community. It was at Breitenbush that he met the love of his life and future wife, Heidi Peterson. In 2003, Dave and Heidi left Breitenbush to care for his mother in Kansas for a year before returning to purchase their dream home in the Blue Mountains of Northeast Oregon. It was here that Dave and Heidi flourished. They enjoyed a mutual passion for entertaining and for sharing the beauty and serenity of their home and region with their diverse community of friends and family. After many years together, Dave and Heidi exchanged wedding vows on August 21, 2010 at their home on Weston Mountain before their dearest friends and family in a multi-day celebration of their love. Dave found peace in his garden and relished in gracing his home with cut flowers and plants. He enjoyed playing jazz piano and bluegrass mandolin and was an award-winning photographer. Dave was a talented craftsman and enjoyed working with his hands doing high end remodeling and construction. Dave loved the Oregon Country Fair and only missed two fairs in twenty seven years. He was a senior member of Energy Park and shared his exuberance for the fair with many people he met. His Blue Mountain paradise served as a quiet and peaceful location to work on his many archival projects documenting citizen activism and his numerous and varied successful efforts to reform state, national and international public policies. Dave was a gifted writer and public speaker who thrived on educating and empowering individuals to take control of their lives. These ethics influenced every interaction he shared with his colleagues, peers and friends. Dave had a dynamic and radiant spirit and he will be remembered for his ability to make every person that he met feel that they were important and special. Dave is survived by his wife, Heidi Peterson of Weston Mountain, Oregon, his sister Catherine Hunt of Salina, Kansas plus the many friends who shared in his life's adventure. Efforts are underway to establish a foundation in Dave's honor that will support citizen-to-citizen diplomacy to find common understanding among people in contentious issues as well as other causes that were important to Dave. Arrangements are being made with an interim non-profit organization to receive donations in Dave's honor for this purpose. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to support this effort at: David D. Hunt Fund; c/o CAPECO; 721 SE Third Street; Pendleton, OR, 97801. John McKinney

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 3:56 AM - Walla Walla Union-Bulletin Staff

Jan. 10, 1940 - Jan. 15, 2011

John W. Haigh

John W. HAIGH An ardent newspaperman to the very end, John would put on coat and beret, shake his 92-year-old bones, and push his walker through icy rains or snow to bring in the morning paper. It wasn't so much the news he was looking for as a lost vowel or misused verb that had him bring out the red pencil! John W. Haigh died Thursday, January 13, after a gallant three and one half year battle with kidney disease. He was born August 18, 1918 to Dr. Frank and Mabel Haigh in Walla Walla. Dr. Haigh was a chemistry professor at Whitman College, so family life was intertwined with other faculty families. John's first venture in publication was when he and friends put out the occasional 'Semi-Monthly Gazette'. A kind mother printed it on a mimeograph. During college years he worked on the 'Pioneer.' Later, on the Union-Bulletin he was paid $12.00 per week. At last he worked at the Milwaukee Journal for several years. After World War II he decided the Northwest was his true home and found a job at the Yakima Herald-Republic. At that time the building of hydroelectric dams was at its peak and John immersed himself in learning all he could about them. Also about then, Jean Lanham was hired as a new reporter. John wasted no time asking her to marry him and one week later they were married. Weekends were spent visiting dams. As their three daughters were born, they, too, joined the weekend outings. In 1956 John was awarded an Ogden-Reed fellowship by the New York Herald-Tribune. He was to study dams in Western Europe. We packed up the family and took the train to New York to catch the Queen Elizabeth to France. Visiting dams in Europe was much the same as doing it here. John did his work while his family puttered around nearby paths or parks, ending each day with a picnic. The Seattle Times offered John a reporting job when we returned to the U.S. He worked for the Times 27 years before retiring in 1983. John felt he had a great life - families that lived near him and saw him often, good friends to work with and a job he enjoyed, and his beloved basset who is devastated, as are we all! He leaves his wife, Jean, after 62 years, his daughters Jeanette Hagen (Ken), Virginia Immanuel (Jacob), Katy Haigh (Mark Wilkins); grandchildren Camille, Rudy, Henry, Jessa, Shayne, Tyler, Susheel; and five great grandchildren. His sister, Helen Mills of Portland, also survives. A memorial service will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, January 22, in the Chapel at Plymouth Congregational Church (Sixth Avenue and University Street). Parking is available in Plymouth garage. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Nature Conservancy, P.O. Box 6014 Albert Lea, MN 56007.

Patricia Jane "Pat" Curran

Patricia "Pat" Jane CURRAN 1933~2011 Patricia "Pat" Jane Curran passed away at the age of 77 on January 15th, 2011, after a short bout with lung cancer. She lived in Kent, Washington for almost 50 years, where she recently reigned as Queen of Kent (Old timers' division). Pat was born in Spokane, Wash ington on September 25, 1933 to Doris and Wallace Phillips. In the early 1940s, they lived in Chewe lah, Washington, where her parents both had multiple jobs, best of all running the local movie theater. Pat and her brother Wally saw every new movie more than once, with free popcorn and candy to boot. Pat spent her summers at Uncle Debs' wheat ranch in Pomeroy, WA. She grad uated from Stadium High School in Tacoma, Washington, and thereafter the University of Washington with a teaching degree. Pat was married in 1955 to Charles Peter "Pete" Curran from Hillyard, Washington, and they were always known as Pete and Pat. A selfless, organized wife and mother, she raised eight kids with Pete. Her infectious laugh was cherished by her fami ly and friends. Pat and Pete made travel possible for their family to attend frequent reunions, allow ing the young, far flung cousins to become good friends. They brought their young brood with them on an epic trip to Europe in 1979, arriving in each town without reservations and nine people for whom to find rooms at the inn. Pat was a strong Catholic, long time parishioner and lay minister at Holy Spirit Parish in Kent, served the needy of all beliefs through St. Vincent De Paul. As a community organizer, Pat worked behind the scenes to get things done. She spearheaded downtown Kent development through the Kent Downtown Part ners. She was an early supporter of Kent's Saturday Market, one of the first of these now-ubiquitous local farmers and crafts markets. She was a fearsome Scrabble player and crossword fan; she wrote and published poetry with an edge: "Here, behind the marigolds, a cat with one eye has been tossing a limp mouse into the air all evening" (from "Hiding in the Garden" Pat was an arts promoter, and with Pete, brought the Blind Boys of Alabama to Kent as well as other performing artists. She was a Washington State Arts Commis sioner and an officer of the North west Renaissance poetry organi zation. She was a card carrying member of the National Organization for Women and diehard Democrat. Pat was sprightly and open to new people, indeed a collector of friends; organizing her walking group, gathering with her book group and high school friends, playing tennis until three months ago with yet another circle of women. Pat and Pete were adventure trav elers, trekking as young seniors to Cuba, Egypt and Vietnam. She served and donated to many candidates and causes, including St. Vincent de Paul and Chil dren's Orthopedic. Pat will be greatly missed by her husband, Pete Curran, and her children Keelin (Jack), Sheila (Henry), Marcy (Rod), Betsey (Jonathan), Brendan (Amy), Mary (Dean), and Megan (Eric). Her beloved son Colin died in 1983. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren, Claire, Paloma, Colum, Melanie, Mackenzie, Delaney, Kevin, Katya, Beau, Graham, Declan, Dylan, Marlena, Audrey, Camille, Althea, Augie, Otis and Olivia, a great grand child, Stazzi James, and her two brothers Wally and Jay Phillips. Mom passed peacefully into the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus on January 7, 2011., She was born on October 12, 1918 to Robert and Mable Fey in Spink County, South Dakota. She grew up in the farming community near Aberdeen, SD., Mom was an RN and spent her life caring for others. She was the nurse that all of the patients loved, and other staff enjoyed working with. She left South Dakota and relocated to Seattle where she met Robert Keller and they fell in love. They were married March 18, 1948 in Seattle. They had three daughters while living in Seattle. In 1958, Thanksgiving day, they purchased six acres and moved the family to the Snohomish, WA area near Clearview where Mom became known as a person who had a strong, caring, and innovative nursing sensibility. Her neighbors in the surrounding community would call upon her as a resource when they needed assistance. Our kitchen was Dr. Mom's ER. 1. So, why are only some of these doing services at funeral homes in seattle? I guess that some people would prefer to do it in a hometown or something. I love reading obituaries just to see all of the amazing things ordinary people did. Thank you.
